Prof. Dieter Kranzlmüller Named Chairman of the Board at LRZ in Germany

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Arndt Bode, Chairman of the Board of Directors of LRZ (right), hands over the key to his successor, Prof. Dr. Dieter Kranzlmüller.

Today the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) announced that Prof. Dr. Dieter Kranzlmüller is the new Chairman of the Board of Directors at GCS member Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ). Kranzlmüller succeeds Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Arndt Bode who has been Chairman of the Board since October 1st, 2008. Prof. Bode will continue to be a member of the LRZ Board of Directors.

In 2008 Dieter Kranzlmüller joined the Board of Directors at LRZ and became a full professor of computer science at the Chair for Communication Systems and System Programming at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (LMU). His scientific focus lies in e- infrastructures, including network and IT management, grid and cloud computing, as well as in high performance computing, virtual reality and visualisation. Kranzlmüller graduated from the Johannes Kepler University Linz. Having spent a number of years working in the IT industry, he returned to academia to work at the universities of Reading, TU Dresden, École Normale Supérieure Lyon, and to act as deputy director of the EGEE project at CERN in Geneva. He is truly internationally oriented and is a member of many European and international organizations in the field of IT.

Kranzlmüller actively supports the Center for Digital Technology and Management (CDTM), a joint initiative of the two Munich universities, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and Technical University of Munich (TUM), to foster young researchers. Just like Arndt Bode in 2008, Dieter Kranzlmüller will start his duties as the LRZ Chairman of the Board of Directors with the procurement of the next generation supercomputer at LRZ, SuperMUC-NG.

Arndt Bode enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide as an expert in the field of supercomputer architectures and energy efficient high performance computing. Ever since he started his professional career, Bode has been involved in the development of parallel computers and has been for decades one of the drivers in this field. He advanced Germany’s and Europe’s infrastructure in this area and represents Germany in PRACE, the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe. In addition, Bode has been and still is one of the driving forces behind a number of significant German and European organizations and projects like the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing, PROSPECT, ETP4HPC, GÉANT, KONWIHR, just to name a few.

Arndt Bode’s efforts were acknowledged on many occasions, most noticeably in 2015 when he was awarded the Konrad Zuse Medal of the Gesellschaft für Informatik, the German Informatics Society. As the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Bode drove the transition of the LRZ from a classic computing centre to a modern IT service provider.
