As members of the HPC community, we spend a good share our time sharing our work and best practices with our colleagues. But how do we communicate the business value of high performance computing and Big Data analytics to CFOs who have little affinity to discussions of things like cores, Hadoop, and MPI? In this panel discussion, experts and Big Data and HPC will come together to share best practices and communication strategies that have proven effective when talking to CFOs and other C-level executives.”

How will enormous data sets and an endless stream of ever-more granular variables drive supercomputing in the coming years? Will it be like a dust storm that buries us, or flood waters we can redirect and manage? How will it alter the evolution of architecture and subsystems? How will it change computer science education, development tools and job descriptions? And will gargantuan data form a barrier to our evolution to Exascale and beyond by sapping the shrinking resources for funding and creativity?

In this video from the 2013 National HPCC Conference, Dr. Jon Riley from NCMS presents: Latest Developments in Digital Manufacturing.

Twenty years ago General Motors reestablished manufacturing in China and ever since the complex world of global manufacturing has continued to accelerate. What often gets lost in this race is the need for the supply chain to keep pace. The world’s supply chain is comprised of 2,000,000 small and medium sized manufacturers (fewer than 500 employees) which are being tasked to keep up or shut down. At the same time these critical suppliers are being asked for more innovations, quicker and at lower costs. Unfortunately they do not have the technology required to keep pace. This presentation will present the complexity of the challenge ahead for all manufacturers, the opportunity available to those willing to collaboratively develop a solution and the current efforts at NCMS within their Digital Manufacturing Initiative.

In this video from the 2013 National HPCC Conference, Dr. Thomas Sterling from Indiana University presents: Towards the Exascale Target – the Arrow in Flight.

The preceding year has witnessed a strong impetus towards the ultimate US achievement of practical exascale computing through the initiation of research and development programs. There are two trajectories in flight toward this ambitious target in the US, both guided principally by the DOE through an important partnership between the NNSA and the OS/ASCR. One, the incremental flight path through a series of successive petascale systems, is building on step-wise extensions of conventional practices for low risk and minimal disruption to ensure continued US capability growth in performing mission-critical applications throughout the remainder of this decade. The second, the advanced course of revolutionary research, has in its target cross hairs a truly general purpose and easily programmed class of exascale systems. This strategy is enabled by a set of principles that transform a once static methodology to a dynamic adaptive paradigm to advance efficiency and scalability while exhibiting a far more programmable user interface. This presentation will review the important strides made over the last year and describe the significant accomplishments that have been achieved under the guidance of the DOE leadership in establishing key programs that will maintain US competitiveness internationally and leadership at home.

The internet, sensors and high performance computing are some of the top Big Data producers. Recently, there has been increased focus on extracting more value out of these generated data. Analysis of Big Data sets may be simplified as “looking for needle in a haystack” on one end of a spectrum to “looking for relationships between hay in a stack” on the other. We will discuss the architectural platforms and tools suitable for different parts of this spectrum.”

In this video from the 2013 National HPCC Conference, Don Lamb from the University of Chicago presents: Scientific Discovery Through HPC Simulations of High Energy Density Physics Experiments.

The availability of multi-petaflop computers and the advent of high-power laser systems have created new opportunities to explore the properties of matter at high temperatures, densities, and pressures. This research in high energy density physics is of great importance for astrophysics, material science, and inertial confinement fusion, among other fields. As an example, the generation of magnetic fields by asymmetric shocks is widely invoked as the source of cosmic magnetic fields and is of high interest in inertial confinement fusion. As another example, amplification of magnetic fields by turbulence is a “holy grail” of both computer simulations and laboratory experiments. In this talk, I describe large, multi-scale, multi-physics simulations validated by high-powered laser experiments that are providing new insights into these fundamental physical processes.”

NASA’s observations from Earth-orbiting satellites and outputs from computational climate models have contributed to one of the most data-intensive scientific disciplines today.
In this video from the 2013 National HPCC Conference, Wolfgang Gentzsch presents: EUDAT and Big Data in Science.

Big data science emerges as a new paradigm for scientific discovery that reflects the increasing value of observational, experimental and computer-generated data in virtually all domains, from physics to the humanities and social sciences. Addressing this new paradigm, the EUDAT project is a European data initiative that brings together a unique consortium of 25 partners — including research communities, national data and high performance computing (HPC) centers, technology providers, and funding agencies — from 13 countries. EUDAT aims to build a sustainable cross-disciplinary and cross-national data infrastructure that provides a set of shared services for accessing and preserving research data.
In this video, Thomas Sterling from Indiana University presents: A Roadmap to Exascale. Recorded at the 2012 National HPCC Conference in Newport.

Abstract:
After years of talk, the task of achieving Exaflops sustained performance on practical and usable systems by the end of this decade has been initiated both in the US and internationally. Unlike the era leading up to Petaflops, it is accepted that government investment by many nations will be required to realize this goal and provide such resource capabilities. What is not clear is whether like the achievement of Petaflops, Exascale is simply a scaled up version of prior computing techniques or if an entirely new model is required. Now, real work has been undertaken in the US to begin to ferret out the answer to this question. Under DARPA sponsorship of the UHPC program and more recent DOE support the hardware and software technology base requirements and strategies is being explored in-depth. At risk is either disruption or worse failure. And of course, there is the possibility of getting it wrong. If conventional techniques cannot scale the factor of four orders of magnitude in concurrency probably required, across a broad range of applications, then Exascale will be unachievable through incremental techniques. But then, this requires a high-risk revolutionary strategy that may prove disruptive to legacy codes and skill-sets. This presentation will discuss the progress made in the US in the field of Exascale over the previous year, describe DARPA and DOE projects in this area, present recent results, and suggest their implications for the future.

In this video, Dr. Rupak Biswas from NASA presents: NASA Advanced Computing Environment for Science and Engineering. Recorded at the National HPCC conference 2012 in Newport.

In addition to providing production supercomputing cycles to NASA scientists and engineers, HECC is also responsible as the Agency’s expert in evaluating emerging supercomputing technologies and maturing the most appropriate ones into the production environment. For instance, HECC has 200 of the latest GPUs from Nvidia, several of which are integrated directly into Pleiades. GPUs can be an extremely efficient way to process massive amounts of observational data. But other accelerator technologies are being critically evaluated as well. One interesting option is Intel’s Many Integrated Core (MIC) architecture that offers a critical advantage over GPUs in that code conversions to CUDA or OpenCL are not required to run applications – only compiler directives. However, full utilization of MIC may require code modifications. HECC is also investigating other advanced IT technologies such as cloud computing for science and engineering applications, collaborative environments such as the NASA Earth Exchange (NEX), special-purpose hardware/software solutions for Big Data analysis, and quantum computing for difficult non-polynomial time optimization problems. The overall goal is for HECC to provide a consolidated bleeding-edge environment for all of NASA’s computational and analysis requirements.

Note: audio issues with this program have been repaired.

In this video, Alex Kent from Los Alamos National Lab presents: Cyber Security Defense Using HPC.

Abstract:
Adversaries in the cyber domain continue to escalate their use of more sophisticated attacks and associated detection countermeasures. As a result, the difficulty and complexity of finding such adversaries and their attacks increasingly challenges cyber defenders. Traditionally, high performance and parallel computing (HPC) has been a successful tool in tackling complex problems, particularly over large data sets. Yet it has only been recently that HPC has successfully impacted the cyber defense problem. This talk will introduce the cyber defense problem space and its escalating nature. Three key areas where HPC is making contemporary and tangible improvements to cyber defense will then be discussed: distributed data storage and query, streaming data analysis, and large-scale graph analysis. Each of these areas will include overviews of both research and operational systems currently at the Department of Energy national laboratories that are leveraging core HPC capabilities for improved cyber defense. In addition, the importance and use of both message passing (e.g. MPI) and map/reduce (e.g. Hadoop) approaches to parallel processing will be highlighted. The talk will conclude with a discussion of the critical importance of HPC in forward-looking cyber security defense and where future directions may lead.”
