Putting HPC into the Hands of Every Engineer and Scientist

In this special guest feature from Scientific Computing World, Wolfgang Gentzsch explains the role of HPC container technology in providing ubiquitous access to HPC. “The advent of lightweight pervasive, packageable, portable, scalable, interactive, easy to access and use HPC application containers based on Docker technology running seamlessly on workstations, servers, and clouds, is bringing us ever closer to the democratization of HPC.”

STAR-CCM+ Moves to the Cloud with ACTnowHPC

Today Advanced Clustering Technologies announced it has partnered with CD-adapco to offer the company’s industry-leading engineering simulation software solution, STAR-CCM+, to customers using Advanced Clustering’s on demand HPC cluster in the cloud, ACTnowHPC. “We’re pleased to announce that our HPC cloud now makes STAR-CCM+ immediately accessible to engineers who purchase the license from CD-adapco,” said Kyle Sheumaker, President of Advanced Clustering Technologies. “With STAR-CCM+, we’re making it easier than ever for our customers to enhance workflow productivity in order to discover better designs faster.”

Siemens to Acquire CD-adapco

siemensToday Siemens AG in Germany announced plans Monday to acquire HPC software maker CD-adapco in a stock purchase agreement valued at $970 million. “As part of its Vision 2020, Siemens is acquiring CD-adapco and sharpening its focus on growth in digital business and expanding its portfolio in the area of industry software,” said Siemens managing board member Klaus Helmrich.

Is MDX the Future of Engineering Simulation?

“By adopting an MDX philosophy, engineers are able to test designs automatically from the early concept stages and against all of the physical factors that might influence a system’s performance. It assesses which set of design parameters will break a system, and which will improve it. This pushes back the simulation process to force engineers to question every assumption they have made within a design, and optimise it appropriately by assessing a simulation with multiple operating scenarios.”

STAR-CCM+ Scales to 102,000 Cores on Blue Waters

NCSA recently announced a new world record by scaling CD-adapco’s flagship simulation tool STAR-CCM+ to 102,000 cores on the Blue Waters supercomputer.

Scaling STAR-CCM+ to 55,000 Cores on Hornet

Today CD-adapco announced a significant scalability milestone for its STAR-CCM+ CFD software. Optimized over the course of a year in collaboration with HLRS and SICOS BW, STAR-CCM+ was run on the entirety of the 1.045 PetaFlop Hermit cluster, managing to maintain perfect scalability beyond 55,000 cores.

The Past, Present and Future of Engineering Simulation

“Whereas previous generations of engineers could take some comfort in the ‘safety net’ of extensive physical testing to rescue them from the occasional poor prediction, CAE is increasingly the victim of its own success as simulation continues to displace hardware testing as industry’s verification method of choice. Although this increased confidence in simulation is well-deserved (and has been hard-earned through many years of successful prediction), it brings with it a great deal of pressure to ‘get the answer right’ every time.”
