Radio Free HPC Ponders Amdahl’s Law, GPUs, and the ASC19 Student Cluster Competition

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team reviews the results of the ASC19 Student Cluster Competition and HPC workshop in China. “For the first time, a non-mainland-Chinese team wins the top spot. Taiwan takes the gold in part by their stellar performance in HPCG benchmark where they achieved 2 TFlops, some 25% better than the 2nd best team. The system was a 5-node cluster with Infiniband FDR interconnect.”

New InfiniBand Architecture Specifications Extend Virtualization Support

“As performance demands continue to evolve in both HPC and enterprise cloud applications, the IBTA saw an increasing need for new enhancements to InfiniBand’s network capabilities, support features and overall interoperability,” said Bill Magro, co-chair of the IBTA Technical Working Group. “Our two new InfiniBand Architecture Specification updates satisfy these demands by delivering interoperability and testing upgrades for EDR and FDR, flexible management capabilities for optimal low-latency and low-power functionality and virtualization support for better network scalability.”

Dell Powers New Pearcey Cluster at CSIRO in Australia

The CSIRO national science agency in Australia has teamed up with Dell to deliver a new HPC cluster called “Pearcey.” The Pearcey cluster supports CSIRO research activities in a broad range of areas such as Bioinformatics, Fluid Dynamics and Materials Science. One CSIRO researcher benefiting from using Pearcey is Dr. Dayalan Gunasegaram, a CSIRO computational modeler who is using Pearcey for the modeling work behind the development of an improved nylon mesh for use in pelvic organ prolapse (POP) surgery, which has the potential to benefit the one in five Australian women that have surgery for the condition at some point in their lives.

Comparing FDR and EDR InfiniBand

Over at the Dell HPC Blog, Olumide Olusanya and Munira Hussain have posted an interesting comparison of FDR and EDR InfiniBand. “In the first post, we shared OSU Micro-Benchmarks (latency and bandwidth) and HPL performance between FDR and EDR Infiniband. In this part, we will further compare performance using additional real-world applications such as ANSYS Fluent, WRF, and NAS Parallel Benchmarks. In both blogs, we have shown several micro-benchmark and real-world application results to compare FDR with EDR Infiniband.”

Virtualized High Performance Computing with Mellanox FDR and RoCE
