Video: Is Remote GPU Virtualization Useful?

“Although the use of GPUs has generalized nowadays, including GPUs in current HPC clusters presents several drawbacks mainly related with increased costs. In this talk we present how the use of remote GPU virtualization may overcome these drawbacks while noticeably increasing the overall cluster throughput. The talk presents real throughput measurements by making use of the rCUDA remote GPU virtualization middleware.”

Video: Infinite Memory Engine (IME) Burst Buffer Experience at CSCS

Hussein Harake from CSCS presented this talk at the HPC Advisory Council Spain Conference. “IME unleashes a new I/O provisioning paradigm. This breakthrough, software defined storage application introduces a whole new new tier of transparent, extendable, non-volatile memory (NVM), that provides game-changing latency reduction and greater bandwidth and IOPS performance for the next generation of performance hungry scientific, analytic and big data applications – all while offering significantly greater economic and operational efficiency than today’s traditional disk-based and all flash array storage approaches that are currently used to scale performance.”

Communication Frameworks for HPC and Big Data

DK Panda from Ohio State University presented this talk at the HPC Advisory Council Spain Conference. “Dr. Panda and his research group members have been doing extensive research on modern networking technologies including InfiniBand and 10-40GE/iWARP. His research group is currently collaborating with National Laboratories and leading InfiniBand and 10-40GE/iWARP companies on designing various subsystems of next generation high-end systems.”

UCX: Co-Design Architecture For Next Generation HPC Systems

“The UCX Unified Communication X project is a collaboration between industry, laboratories, and academia to create an open-source production grade communication framework for data centric and high-performance applications. At the core of the UCX project are the combined features, ideas, and concepts of industry leading technologies including MXM, PAMI and UCCS. Mellanox Technologies has contributed their MXM technology, which provides enhancements to parallel communication.”

Video: Worldwide HPC Market & 2015-2019 Market Forecast

“Intersect360 Research’s annual HPC market model and forecast shows modest growth in 2014. Despite ongoing weakness in the public sector, commercial usage of HPC drove the market to $29.4 billion in 2014, a year-over-year growth of 2.8%. As applications for high-performance technologies expand, the market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 4.2% through 2019.”

BSC and Integrating Persistent Data and Parallel Programming Models

Toni Cortés from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center presented this talk at the HPC Advisory Council Spain Conference. “BSC is the National Supercomputing Facility in Spain and was officially constituted in April 2005. BSC-CNS manages MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, located at the Torre Girona chapel. The mission of BSC-CNS is to investigate, develop and manage information technology in order to facilitate scientific progress.”

Video: Big Data Powers Climate Research at BSC

In this video from the Barcelona Supercomputer Center, Big Data is presented as a key challenge for researchers studying global climate change. “Changes in the composition of the atmosphere can affect the habitability of the planet by modifying the air quality and altering long-term climate. Research in this area is devoted to the development, implementation and refinement of global and regional state-of-the-art models for short-term air quality forecasting and long-term climate predictions.”

BSC and CEA to Collaborate on HPC Innovation

Today the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) announced plans to collaborate on HPC research and technology innovation. Both organizations have signed an agreement to help promoting “a globally competitive HPC value chain and flagship industry”, echoing the European Union strategy in the domain.
