The challenge resides in the requirement to support both heterogeneous workloads with the same hardware architecture. The opportunity lies in creating a common software stack to accommodate the requirements of scientific simulations and big data applications productively while maximizing performance and throughput.

Shaheen Supercomputer at KAUST Completes Trillion Cell Reservoir Simulation

Over at KAUST News, Nicholas G. Demille writes that the Shaheen supercomputer has completed the world’s first trillion cell reservoir simulation. A Saudi Aramco research team led by fellow Ali Dogru conducted the reservoir simulation using Shaheen and the company’s proprietary software TeraPOWERS. The Aramco researchers were supported by a team of specialists from the KAUST Supercomputing Core Lab, with the work rendering imagery so detailed that it changed the face of natural resource exploration.

KAUST is the Latest Intel Parallel Computing Center

KAUST in Saudi Arabia has been named as the latest Intel Parallel Computing Center. “The new PCC aims to provide scalable software kernels common to scientific simulation codes that will adapt well to future architectures, including a scheduled upgrade of KAUST’s globally Top10 Intel-based Cray XC40 system. In the spirit of co-design, Intel PCC at KAUST will also provide feedback that could influence architectural design trade-offs.”
