PRACE Awards Hundreds of Millions More Core Hours to Combat COVID-19

PRACE, the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe, has issued an additional 10 awards of supercomputing resources, with a total of 227.6 million core hours for the European Union’s effort to combat COVID-19. ICHEC to develop quantum circuit simulation tools for Europe’s largest supercomputers

Today the Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) announced that it is leading a novel quantum simulation project in collaboration with partners at the Leibniz Supercomputing centre (LRZ) to develop quantum simulation tools for Europe’s largest supercomputers. “While actual quantum computing is still some way off, the simulation tools we are creating will advance the necessary concepts and skill-sets for quantum programming,” said Dr Niall Moran, Principal Investigator and project leader of the PRACE WP8 QuantEx project at ICHEC. “This work is being conducted with world-class research teams across a number of Irish third-level institutions and will contribute to preparing Ireland for Quantum programming.”

PRACE Awards 195 Million Core Hours to fight Coronavirus

PRACE is joining the battle against COVID-19 by providing huge computational power – 195 Million core hours – to the first ten projects awarded under the Fast Track Call for Proposals to support the mitigation of the impact of the pandemic. “These projects will provide new lead compounds and targets for further in vitro and in vivo studies of SARS-CoV-2 (virus strain causing coronavirus disease COVID-19), new insights for those drugs currently undergoing clinical studies and also possible new strategies for drug repositioning to treat SARS-CoV-2 infections.”

European HPC ecosystem supports the fight against COVID-19

The European PRACE initiative has released a list of partner activities and initiatives to help combat COVID-19. While medical professionals are working around the clock to help those affected, PRACE partners, HPC centres, and research infrastructures are doing their bit by opening up their facilities for urgent/priority access to the HPC systems and other resources to support the research to combat the coronavirus.

How PRACE Brings HPC to Industry

In this special guest feature, Robert Roe from Scientific Computing World speaks with Lee Margetts, chair of PRACE’s industrial advisory committee, about its work to increase the engagement of industrial HPC users. “When we started in 2013, PRACE set up an IAC to give advice about improving engagement with industry, and the impression that I get is that this was motivated by the European Commission wanting to see their investment have a benefit to job creation and technology transfer.”

PRACE SHAPE Programme to Support Five new SMEs with HPC

PRACE has announced that following the 9th Call for applications to SHAPE, five more SMEs will be able to start working with PRACE to gain access to HPC expertise and resources, expand their HPC experience and ultimately enhance their business. “So far, SHAPE has helped 45 companies to use HPC, allowing them to benefit from using HPC in their business.”

CSC Finland powers AI to help predict hybrid nanoparticle structures

Researchers in Finland have achieved a significant step forward in predicting atomic structures of hybrid nanoparticles. The work was carried out using supercomputing resources at CSC and the Barcelona supercomputing center, as a part of a PRACE project. “This is a significant step forward within the context of new interdisciplinary collaboration in our university. Applying artificial intelligence to challenging topics in nanoscience, such as structural predictions for new nanomaterials, will surely lead to new breakthroughs.”
