In this extraordinary episode of Radio Free HPC, the crew interviews the industry icon that is @HPC_Guru. This is the first time that anyone has been granted an interview with him and we’re proud to have been chosen for this honor. We posed an even dozen questions and received very thoughtful responses, which we rendered out in a machine voice in order to fit our podcast format. In the interview, HPC_Guru tells us his top five cool things in HPC today, why he remains anonymous, where he thinks HPC hardware will be in 10 years and who he thinks will be the first to reach exascale. Radio Free HPC Looks at NVIDIA’s acquisition of Mellanox

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team looks at NVIDIA’s acquisition of Mellanox. “This called for an emergency session of our crack panel. While it will be several months before the full impact of this merger is felt, the RFHPC team believes this will change both the HPC and the Datacenter markets. It also signals Nvidia’s journey towards becoming more of a systems company and gives them a better shot at the enterprise AI market.”

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC says goodbye to Intel’s Itanium processor. “After years of futility, Intel has finally put a stake in the heart of their Itanium processor. The final shipment will take place in 2021. The boys discuss some Itanium history and reasons behind the end of the processor.”

Podcast: China Tianhe-3 Exascale machine is coming

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team takes a second look at China’s plans for the Tianhe-3 exascale supercomputer. “According to news articles, Tianhe-3 will be 200 times faster than Tianhe-1, with 100x more storage. What we don’t know is if these comparisons are relative to Tianhe-1 or Tianhe 1A. The later machine weighs in at 2.256 PFlop/s which means that Tianhe-3 might be as fast as 450 PFlop/s when complete. We also made a reference to a past episode, which we know you remember vividly, where we discussed China’s three-pronged strategy for exascale.”

Today ISC 2017 announced that a record 3200 HPC enthusiasts from 60 countries have registered for the conference. The event also received an international media spotlight, with 60 technical and business journalists on site to provide live coverage of the exhibition and the conference sessions.
