Intel announced last week at Sun’s JavaOne event in San Francisco that it would (finally) port Java to Itanium (coverage from PC World). Sun and Intel are also working together to improve the performance of Solaris on Intel chips (from The Register)
Also promised is fine-tuning OpenSolaris to Intel’s x86 hardware, on-going co-operation to boost performance of Solaris on Intel, and research into Solaris’ support for Intel virtualization.
Despite all the love, Sun did not announce plans to build Itanium-based servers (Sun’s previous commitments are only to build Xeon-based servers).
