Installation work is underway on a 445TFLOPS upgrade to ANL’s BlueGene/P supercomputer, taking it to a total of 556TFLOPS. The news release from ANL gives more details, the usual collection of quotes noting how much faster it is than millions of people with calculators etc, and some advertisements for IBM. The 163,840 processor system is the latest in a recent list of BG/P announcements, showing the IBM product migrating well from the ‘research’ status of the BG/L predecessor to what appears to be an increasingly influential product in the HPC community (see our earlier story on ORNL buying a BG/P).
