EU fines Intel $1.45B

There is a lot of conversation about this, and most of it isn’t directly HPC related, so I don’t want to spend a lot of time on this decision but it seems like I should at least touch on it. From CNN.com we find that the European Commission has fined Intel $1.45B as punishment for violation of anti-trust provisions

Intel logoIt is the largest fine the commission has ever imposed, said Neelie Kroes, the European commissioner for competition. Intel has said it plans to appeal the decision.

The commission found Intel abused its dominant market position in the market for computer chips known as the x86 computer processing unit (CPU), Kroes said. The abuse lasted more than five years, she said.
