Tokyo Tech Tsubame 2.0 Hardware Specs

The Tokyo Institute of Technology announced that their Tsubame 2.0 machine will begin operation this fall.  Tsubame 2.0 is built to hit the 2.4 petaflop level using mixed technologies from Intel, HP, NVIDIA and contracting from NEC.  This is quite a departure from the Tsubame 1.0 design, built with gear from Sun.

According to TheRegister, hardware specs will include:

Tokyo Tech says that the Tsubame 2.0 super will have 1,400 compute nodes using six-core “Westmere-EP” Xeon 5600 processors in two-socket machines as well as eight-core Xeon 7500 processors in what everyone assumes will be large memory nodes. Tokyo Tech is also plunking 4,200 of Nvidia’s latest embedded M2050 graphics co-processors into some of the nodes.

This week, they released more accurate hardware specs:

…it will use 2,816 six-core, 2.96GHz Xeon 5600 processors combined with 4,224 of NVIDIA’s Tesla M2050 general-purpose GPUS…

That’s quite a system!

AMD is still waiting to see if hetero-computing will take off or not.

  2. Prediction: Tsubame 2.o in Japan will come in at #1 on the TOP500 in November, 2010. This will set off a panic in Congress something akin to when the Earth Simulator eclipsed US systems eight or so years ago. Hello, funding for US competitiveness.

  3. The title is not right, Tokyo Univ and Tokyo Tech is completely different institution
