Dell Partners with the University of Cambridge on HPC

Troy West, Dell’s VP and General Manager in EMEA, posted an article to the Dell Enterprise Tech Center site detailing their new partnership with the University of Cambridge.  He was on site at Cambridge today to help officially open the new center, deemed the Dell|Cambridge High Performance Computing Centre.  The new center will combine large-scale HPC gear from Dell with the research know-how at Cambridge.

This is an exciting day for Dell as the Solution Centre marks a significant new collaboration aiming to accelerate discovery, and provides HPC solution blueprints and firsthand operational HPC experience targeted at solving “real world” challenges. Dr. Paul Calleja, Director HPC Service, University of Cambridge, and I, will welcome a number of researchers from across the HPC community, including press and analysts to today’s opening. The Cambridge side is led by Dr. Paul Calleja, Director of HPC Service.  According to Calleja, the team has already gained a wealth of knowledge in HPC machine construction and operations.  Knowledge discovery areas include:

  • Lustre parallel file systems, storage design, implementation and operation
  • GPU Clusters – CUDA programming and GPU cluster system integration
  • Scientific visualisation – commodity 3D Visualisation and remote visualisation
  • Application optimisation and benchmarking, MPI profiling
  • Resource management and scheduling
  • HPC Cloud provisioning

The Solutions Centre has been founded with the overriding mandate of providing accessible research computing services and technology to organisations that would otherwise not have the money or expertise to benefit from such advantages, whether they are from academic or private sector backgrounds.
