Measuring HPC Power and Cooling

Dell’s John Fragalla is out with part two of his blog post on Measuring HPC Power and Cooling. John knows his stuff, and I’m glad that Dell has had better luck inspiring to blog than I did with him back at Sun. Part one of the post is also available at the Dell Enterprise Technology Center.

After architecting a HPC System, which includes all aspects of a solution, customers would like to know the power consumption of the system. When measuring power consumption, it depends on the customers’ application workload. Each application will stress the HPC system differently. The key is using an application or benchmark commonly used in HPC that provides the highest measured power consumption compared to customers’ applications.

And if measuring power efficiency is your thing, the Register has just published a whitepaper with that in mind just for you.
