Video: Dell Packs 96 Cores in 2U Chassis

With AMD’s announcement of new Magny-Cours processors comes word of a new Dell server that packs an unprecedented amount of compute power in a 2U chassis.

The PowerEdge C6145 comprises two independent 4-socket server nodes in a 2U chassis with the latest AMD Opteron 6000 processors, which enables greater performance per node while reducing space, weight and consuming less energy. Further, customers can scale up to 96 cores, up to 1TB memory, and expanded I/O to quickly compile data and results, and connect to other resources.

  1. Are you serious? Marketing spiel is all this is. There is nothing of substance here. Show me how this benefits HPC applications. Show me why the performance on this platform is so much better. I see only marketing hype from a company that is notorious for delivering servers with 20%+ failure rates.

A YouTube video like this is something I like to post because I think my audience appreciates a first look at a new box with just the facts. And yes, I do hope to get some more information on benchmarks as they become available.

      If this is about fairness, doesn’t it just sound like sour grapes to put out an anonymous posting of Dell failure rates without any citation as to the source?

  3. Here’s some recent benchmark information. The PowerEdge C6145 ranked as the highest performing x86 2U shared infrastructure server on the market based on SPECfp_rate2006 results. In addition, the PowerEdge C6145 can deliver up to a 534% better price performance at 1/5 the cost and 1/4 of the rack space when compared to HP’s ProLiant DL980 G7.

    The results for the Dell PowerEdge C6145 server are based upon data submitted to Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation as of February 14, 2011 and data published on http://www.spec.org as of February 3, 2011. The SPECfp_rate2006 comparison is based on the best performing 8-chip x86 servers.

    A 2U/2-node beat the HP 8U. so, the short answer to what that can do for HPC applications: help you see results faster while saving on cost and space.

  4. Rich I think 1 minute or research will prove my point regarding failure rates. But failure rates are not the point. You are missing the point. Your comment, “Keep your flying logos far, far away and we’ll be happy to share your stuff. Thanks!” is out of line unless you remove any mention of hte manufacturer of any systems on your site. It really seems you have your favored vendors (probably ones paying money) and everyone else. Focus here Rich. What is the goal of InsideHPC if it is not promote oneself and since you are serving as the gatekeeper of who gets to post what, then how can readers get a full view of the market.
