New Software Identifies Bottlenecks in Scientific Computing Codes

PerfExpert is an easy-to-use performance diagnosis tool for HPC applications that offers suggestions for bottleneck remediation. Developed by a team lead by Martin Burtscher, professor of computer science at Texas State University, PerfExpert automatically analyzes the performance of programs and suggests optimizations to alleviate the identified bottlenecks.

Testing the tool on Ranger, the group used PerfExpert to optimize four robust science codes, and achieved speedups of up to 40 percent overall. “On Ranger, that’s like having 25,000 extra cores,” Burtscher said.
