Slidecast: Power Systems — Open Innovation to Put Data to Work

“According to Big Blue, the new scale-out Power servers culminate a $2.4 billion investment and are built from the ground up to harness Big Data with the new IBM Power8 processor. During the launch event, IBM unveiled a rack full of 2U Power8 servers with up to 100 Terabytes of in-memory analytics capacity.”

OFA to Streamline Verbs Interface

“OpenFabrics Alliance members are working to streamline and make the verbs interface more efficient. Since this is an open source effort this will take some time, but the consensus is that there is too much overhead both in the depth of the call stack and in the size of associated data structures for verbs to scale well in the exascale era.”

In this video from the OpenFabrics International Developer Workshop 2014, Doug Oucharek from Intel presents: Lustre File System.

JICS to Collaborate with WARP Mechanics on Next-Gen Object Storage

This week the Joint Institute for Computational Sciences at ORNL announced a partnership with WARP Mechanics to study next generation object storage technologies for use in HPC environments. In this video from LUG 2014, Josh Judd from Warp Mechanics presents: Practical Applications of Lustre/ZFS Hybrid Systems.”

This Week in HPC: Altera Gives FPGAs a Floating Point Makeover and IBM Previews Power8 Portfolio

In this episode of This Week in HPC, Michael Feldman and Addison Snell from Intersect360 Research look at Altera’s FPGA floating-point makeover. After the break, they discuss IBM’s new POWER8 servers.

OpenPOWER to Deliver Innovation through Collaboration

“With the marriage of POWER8 and NVIDIA GPUs connected via NVLink, these systems are going to be simply unbeatable when it comes to handling some of the most demanding computing tasks for enterprises and popular consumer Web services. One example: harvesting insights in real time from massive amounts of medical data. Also, IBM is working to accelerate a range of its enterprise data analytics applications with GPUs, allowing customers to take advantage of these high-performance POWER-GPU systems.”

Video: From Google Glass to the SGI UV Supercomputer

In this video, Dr. Eng Lim Goh from SGI demonstrates the company’s “extreme scale-out” server, the SGI UV, which currently scales to 256 Intel Xeon sockets and 64 TB of memory. Because the system runs on a single system image of Linux, researchers can easily access the system through mobile devices such as tablets and even the Google Glass.
