Video: Supercomputing the Human Brain at Jülich

In this video, Prof. Dr. Dirk Pleiter from the Jülich Supercomputing Centre describes how Jülich is creating a 3D model of the human brain. “Jülich Supercomputing Centre, one of the largest research center in Germany, uses Lenovo Enterprise Systems to support research into a wide range of fields including neuroscience, fundamental physics, life sciences, climate change and energy.”

Job of the Week: HPC Grid Engineer at Open Systems Technologies

Open Systems Technologies in New York City is seeking an HPC Grid Engineer in our Job of the Week.

HPC News Bytes for Friday, June 26

While we’re always on the lookout for HPC news, not everything makes it to the front page. Notable items from this week include new benchmarks for 100GB Ethernet, the Open MPI roadmap, and Docker containers.

Video: Supercomputing Exoplanets

Astronomers Erika Nesvold (UMBC) and Marc Kuchner (NASA Goddard) essentially created a virtual Beta Pictoris in the computer and watched it evolve over millions of years. It is the first full 3-D model of a debris disk where scientists can watch the development of asymmetric features formed by planets, like warps and eccentric rings, and also track collisions among the particles at the same time.

Mellanox Benchmarks Ceph on 100Gb Ethernet

Today Mellanox announced a set of 100Gb/s network storage performance benchmark results for Red Hat Ceph Storage and Red Hat Gluster Storage.

Time to Unite Exascale and Big Data

In this video, Dan Reed from the University of Iowa describes the era of Exascale Computing and Big Data. In a recent paper co-authored with Jack Dongarra, Reed makes an impassioned plea for hardware and software integration and cultural convergence.

Materials Discovery by Computation – a Revolution Still in the Making

“We will describe recent progress and successes obtained in predicting properties of matter by quantum simulations, and discuss algorithmic challenges in connection with the use of evolving high-performance computing architectures. We will also discuss open issues related to the validation of the approximate, first principles theories used in large-scale quantum simulations.”

HPC People on the Move – Long, Hot Summer Edition

Dr. Lewey reports on who’s jumping ship and moving on up in high performance computing.

insideBIGDATA Guide to Scientific Research

Daniel Gutierrez, Managing Editor, of insideBIGDATA has put together a terrific Guide to Scientific Research. The goal of this paper is to provide a road map for scientific researchers wishing to capitalize on the rapid growth of big data technology for collecting, transforming, analyzing, and visualizing large scientific data sets.

Power Usage for Coprocessors

“As the use of coprocessors increases to speedup HPC applications, it is important to understand how much additional power the coprocessors use. With various measurements and benchmarks arising to calculate the power used during the running of compute and data intensive applications, measuring the power draw from an Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor is important to understanding the best use of resources.”
