In this video, Dan Olds from OrionX and Pak Lui from the HPC Advisory Council introduce the 12 teams that will battle it out at the ISC 2017 Student Cluster Challenge. The students will take part in a three-day competition at ISC in Frankfurt, from June 19-21.

The competition features small teams that compete to demonstrate the incredible capabilities of state-of- the-art high-performance cluster hardware and software. In a real-time challenge, 12 teams of six undergraduate and/or high school students will build a small cluster of their own design on the ISC exhibit floor and race to demonstrate the greatest performance across a series of benchmarks and applications. The students will have a unique opportunity to learn, experience and demonstrate how high-performance computing influence our world and day-to-day learning. Held in collaboration of the HPC Advisory Council and ISC, the Student Cluster Competition is designed to introduce the next generation of students to the high performance computing world and community.

“Supporting the global demand for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) talent, the sixth annual competition introduces university teams, comprised of six students and up to two advisors each. In addition to applying the knowledge gained through their education, SCC participants learn valuable new skills, including developing basic proposals, obtaining required sponsorships, securing industry partnerships, and designing a platform to run benchmarks and applications within a limited power budget. The competition also nurtures a healthy competitive spirit, develops comradery, and establishes early professional relationships and even lifelong friendships that might have never occurred otherwise. All of these experiences have become as much a benefit of the SCC as the hands-on live-learning experience itself.”
