In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team goes over the results of the SC17 Student Cluster Competition.
This year, Nanyang Technological University from Singapore took the Top Prize, setting a new record of 51.77 Teraflops on Linpack.
“The Student Cluster Competition was developed in 2007 to immerse undergraduate and high school students in high performance computing. Student teams design and build small clusters, with hardware and software vendor partners, learn designated scientific applications, apply optimization techniques for their chosen architectures, and compete in a non-stop, 48-hour challenge, at the SC conference, to complete a real-world scientific workload, while impressing conference attendees and interview judges with their HPC knowledge.”
In this video, Dan Olds from OrionX interviews Team Nanyang, this year’s champions of the SC17 Student Cluster Competition.

After that, we do our Catch of the Week:
-
- Rich is impressed with the Nyriad’s new GPU-accelerated storage device that was developed for Big Data needs of the SKA Telescope Project. For those who missed the SC17 keynote on SKA, insideHPC has the full keynote video replay.
- Dan notes that an activist investor group called Starboard Value is trying to take control of Mellanox. With a 10 percent stake, they seem to be in a position to be heard as there aren’t enough insiders holding shares. “Starboard says MLNX is spending too much on R&D and other corporate expenses to sufficiently grow revenue, sacrificing margins compared with peers, and wants the company to improve its operations and potentially explore a deal to boost the stock.”
- Shahin reports that new FPGAs are being developed specifically for mining cryptocurrency.
