The Ohio Supercomputer Center is seeking an HPC Operations Manager in our Job of the Week.
Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) provides high-performance computing (HPC) services for university researchers and industrial clients. The HPC Systems Team delivers OSC’s production HPC systems, networking, and storage services and are responsible for system design, procurement, deployment, security, operations, and systems administration for the HPC systems.
OSC is seeking an HPC Operations Manager, a new position inside the HPC Systems Team. The operations manager will manage a team of three systems administrators and two student employees. The person who fills this role will be responsible for both supervising operations staff as well as providing technical and organizational expertise for all aspects of the HPC operations. The ideal candidate will be an excellent problem solver, have strong communication skills, and be willing to work in a distributed, team-oriented work environment.
Technical and technical management duties include ensuring standardization of operational procedures; developing detailed plans for systems deployment, operation, and removal from service; creating and maintaining documentation; overseeing upgrades for operating systems, security patches, and firmware; managing help desk tickets that are escalated to the operations team; identifying and proposing ways to streamline operational procedures; troubleshooting problems with the HPC systems; participating in an on-call analyst rotation; managing support contracts for hardware and systems software and ensuring that the appropriate OSC staff have access to vendor support systems; providing overall management for support cases with hardware and systems software vendors to ensure efficient resolution of problems; overseeing the physical IT infrastructure and facilities, ensuring diagrams are updated, and inventory lists are maintained.
Supervisory duties include providing leadership for operations staff; setting goals and managing personnel performance objectives; working with other OSC managers and groups on project coordination; creating project plans and prioritizing tasks; ensuring polices are followed and propose policy changes where necessary; participating in OSC leadership strategic planning efforts.
