March 1, 2023 — The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) has announced a $12 million quantum testbed funding opportunity.

Agency contacts and more details, including eligibility and application information can be found here. The deadline for letters of intent is Friday, March 31, 2023 at 5 pm ET. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at 11:59 pm ET.

DOE said the program’s objective is to improve understanding of whether, when and how quantum computing might advance the frontiers of computational science. Specifically, the purpose of this FOA is to invite applications for foundational research to address the following questions:

What can fundamental physical limits on quantum processors tell us about what quantum computers can and cannot do?

How can we use NISQ devices to move our understanding of when and how quantum computers might be useful as far forward as possible?

How can we assess the utility of a given (existing or hypothetical) quantum processor for advancing the frontiers of computational science?

Applications may address any combination of these themes.
