Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites applications for a full-time Academic Systems Administrator to join our Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) department. The Academic Systems Administrator will provide engineering and administration support for EECS academic computing systems including the daily operation of a small to medium-sized GPU-based high-performance computing (HPC) cluster. They will be responsible for assisting faculty, students, staff, and MSOE partners with running and troubleshooting HPC workloads, developing and delivering training, and planning for growth of the system. Successful candidates will identify, engage and support the needs of faculty, students, staff, and MSOE partners to support a variety of academic and research workloads.


Essential Job Functions

  • Day-to-day operations of EECS academic computing systems including administering and monitoring
  • Working with EECS vice chair to ensure that the computing needs of faculty and students are being met
  • Installing, testing, and maintaining software applications on EECS academic computing systems
  • Configuring and monitoring of scheduling and queuing systems
  • Documenting system administration procedures for routine and complex tasks
  • Developing and delivering training materials related to running and monitoring workloads for users
  • Creating, administering, archiving, and deleting user accounts (~500), user groups and storage systems
  • Creating, clearly communicating, and enforcing policies and procedures
  • Leveraging and developing automation tools where valuable and appropriate
  • Providing reactive support and excellent customer service to all students, faculty, and staff
  • Coordinating with vendors to perform hardware repairs and maintenance in a timely fashion
  • Working closely with campus Information Technology department

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Communicate with MSOE faculty, staff, and students in all departments and external community regarding applications of HPC

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field with two years of professional experience preferred.
  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining enterprise Linux systems.
  • Experience configuring and managing network attached storage systems and networks.
  • Experience managing and troubleshooting high performance network equipment.
  • Experience with application and systems programming languages such as Python, Java, or Javascript.
  • Experience with identity management technology such as LDAP, Kerberos, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the full stack (datacenter rack equipment, server hardware, OS, network, and security) of multi-tenant Linux-based systems both individually and within a team environment.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation such as coding libraries, technical manuals, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, and scripts.
  • Ability to create detailed technical documentation.
  • Ability to speak effectively before employees and constituents of MSOE.
  • Ability to communicate in both written and verbal form.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to use numbers to solve problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to apply complex problem-solving techniques to a variety of situations.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is largely sedentary, the ability to move is required. The employee is occasionally required to traverse within their work area as well as other areas on campus. Ability to lift 35 lbs.

Work Environment

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role uses standard office equipment, including but not limited to computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
