Position Overview

The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) continually works to empower their clients, partner strategically with new research and business opportunities, and lead Ohio’s knowledge economy though the skilled use of high performance computing (HPC). OSC's research and development initiatives position Ohio to become the education and technology state of the future.

 

OSC provides HPC services for university researchers and industrial clients. The HPC Systems Team delivers OSC’s production HPC systems, networking, and storage services and are responsible for system design, procurement, deployment, security, operations, and systems administration for the HPC systems. OSC is seeking a HPC Operations Manager, a new position inside the HPC Systems Team. The operations manager will manage a team of 3 systems administrators and 2 student employees. The person who fills this role will be responsible for both supervising operations staff as well as providing technical and organizational expertise for all aspects of HPC operations. Ideal candidate will be an excellent problem solver, have strong communication skills, and be willing to work in a distributed, team-oriented work environment.

 

Technical and technical management duties include ensuring standardization of operational procedures; developing detailed plans for systems deployment, operation, and removal from service; creating and maintaining documentation; overseeing upgrades for operating systems, security patches, and firmware; managing help desk tickets that are escalated to the operations team; identifying and proposing ways to streamline operational procedures; troubleshooting problems with the HPC systems; participating in an on-call analyst rotation; managing support contracts for hardware and systems software and ensuring that the appropriate OSC staff have access to vendor support systems; providing overall management for support cases with hardware and systems software vendors to ensure efficient resolution of problems; overseeing the physical IT infrastructure and facilities, ensuring diagrams are updated, and inventory lists are maintained.

 

Supervisory duties include providing leadership for operations staff; setting goals and managing personnel performance objectives; working with other OSC managers and groups on project coordination; creating project plans and prioritizing tasks; ensuring polices are followed and propose policy changes where necessary; participating in OSC leadership strategic planning efforts.

 

Work Environment and Culture

The HPC Operations Manager will report to Associate Director, OSC. OSC is part of the Ohio Technology Consortium (OH-TECH) and the main office is located on The Ohio State University’s West Campus. OH-TECH functions as an umbrella organization for Ohio’s statewide technology infrastructure which includes: the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC), the Ohio Academic Resources Network (OARnet), and OhioLINK. Funded by the Ohio General Assembly through the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE), OH-TECH reports to the Chancellor for the ODHE. All fiscal and legal services are provided by The Ohio State University, with direction from the Vice President and Chief Information Officer. To plan for future acquisitions and services, OH-TECH relies upon the guidance of the ODHE and the advice of committees to achieve and sustain national eminence. OSC provides supercomputing, cyberinfrastructure, research and educational resources to a diverse state and national community, including education, academic research, industry and state government. Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Science or other STEM field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5 years experience with large scale or HPC systems
  • Experience as a technical lead, project manager, or supervisor; high degree of proficiency in scripting languages such as Python or Bash
  • High degree of Linux/Unix HPC systems administration experience
  • Familiarity with HPC resource manager and schedulers; high degree of knowledge of HPC storage hardware and software.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Science or other STEM field
  • Proficiency with InfiniBand high speed networking; proficiency with Ethernet networking
  • Familiarity with configuration management and change management
  • Experience with management of data center facilities
  • Some proficiency with Microsoft Windows Server administration.
