Description

HPC Storage Infrastructure Engineer - 92087

Organization: NE-NERSC

Berkeley Lab’s National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC, https://www.nersc.gov/) has a new exciting opportunity for a HPC Storage Infrastructure Engineer to work alongside team members to architect, deploy, and support high-performance parallel storage systems at NERSC.

NERSC is the high performance computing center for the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science programs. These storage systems provide essential long-term data storage for scientific research data, including Magnetic Fusion Energy, High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, Basic Energy Sciences, Biological and Environmental Research, and Advanced Scientific Computing Research. We are seeking a talented engineer with DevOps, Linux system administration, storage system administration, scripting and technical troubleshooting skills to work independently, and also in collaboration with others. In this position you will apply DevOps practices to the large, long-term data storage system which consists of Linux systems, fibre-channel-connected disk-based systems, and tape libraries. NERSC’s archive system stores approximately 240 PB of data including experimental and observational data spanning multiple decades and grew by 35 PB in 2020. Cross-team collaborations and development of innovative solutions to continuously optimize operational and user productivity are essential to success on this team. In this role, you will present your work and collaborate with peers at other leading HPC facilities. You will also engage with vendor engineering teams to evaluate emerging storage technologies to define future directions.

What You Will Do:

• Monitor, administer, and optimize NERSC’s block storage arrays, tape libraries, and Linux-based storage servers.

• Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex problems that arise in NERSC's production storage hardware, software systems, storage networks and systems that utilize NERSC storage systems.

• Assist with architecting and evaluating storage systems and technologies based on analysis of user requirements, storage industry trends, and system monitoring and telemetry.

• Participate in the planning and execution of cross-team maintenance activities, upgrades, and deployments at scale.

• Provide off-hours emergency support in a shared, on-call rotation for a subset of NERSC storage systems.

• Prepare timely documentation, papers, and presentations describing best practices and experiences at scale for dissemination within NERSC and throughout the broader HPC community.

What is Required:

• Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of computing or storage experience or an equivalent combination of education dn experience.

• Experience with DevOps practices, Linux system administration and networks (Ethernet, TCP/IP, FC).

• Experience using one or more interpreted programming or scripting languages such as Python and Bash to automate system management tasks.

• Proven ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex problems that arise in NERSC's production storage hardware, software systems, storage networks and systems that utilize NERSC storage systems.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to document and describe complex tasks to audiences of varying familiarity with storage technologies.

• Previous experience working effectively and collaboratively on a team, as well as giving and receiving constructive feedback to foster communication and trust.

• Availability to provide off-hours support in a shared, on-call rotation for a subset of NERSC storage systems.

• Occasional lifting of server and storage array equipment, moving server cabinets and other accessories.

Notes:

• This is a (full-time/part-time) career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

• Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
