Job Summary
The High-Performance Computing (HPC) group at the University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics supports the systems and software used for the simulations and data science behind leading research in Inertial Confinement Fusion, high-power lasers, high-energy-density physics, plasma physics, material and optical technologies. LLE operates multiple Linux cluster environments and large parallel storage systems to enable its scientists. To help in this work and grow capabilities, LLE seeks systems administrator(s) with a strong interest in scientific and high-performance computing.
Responsibilities
- Assists with automation and configuration management for Linux clusters, parallel storage systems, and affiliated network equipment
- Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and resolves system and application problems with users, peers, vendors, and management
- Helps ensure compliance with security standards and regulations
- Assists in systems analysis to determine system requirements and guide future expansion
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Must be comfortable with:
- Using and administrating Linux systems from the shell
- Writing scripts in bash or Python
- Compiling and reading code written in C/C++
- Repair, installation, configuration, and debugging computer hardware
- Configuring and debugging hosts on ethernet networks
- Presenting issues to peers and managers
- Writing documentation
- Participating in code and change management reviews with management and peers
- Using git, gitlab, and other development and collaborative tools
- Interacting with and engaging in professional communication with users and/or vendors
- Analyzing systems and applications to perform root-cause analysis based on computer science
May have experience with any of the following:
- Configuration management and orchestration tools (i.e., Salt, Puppet, Ansible, etc.)
- Security Standards such as NIST 800-53, NIST 800-171, and/or CMMC
- networking including installing, debugging, and configuring switches, routers, and firewalls
- SRE and/or dev-ops methods and tools
- CI/CD methods and tools
- virtualization and container software
- experience with LDAP, database, web, dhcp, and/or DNS servers
- parallel programming (MPI)
- network and parallel file systems
- reading, building, and debugging C, C++, and/or Fortran codes
- analyzing facility power and cooling requirements for systems
- reading, building, and debugging C, C++, and/or Fortran codes
Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience welcome
