As German Research Center for Environmental Health, Helmholtz Zentrum München pursues the goal of developing personalized medical approaches for the prevention and therapy of major common diseases such as diabetes mellitus, allergies and lung diseases. To achieve this, it investigates the interaction of genetics, environmental factors and lifestyle.

The Scientific Computing department hosts a dynamic computing environment (CPU Cluster, GPU Cloud Computing) and among others, participates in Europe-wide hybrid cloud infrastructure development projects. There are international and national partners to develop and operate cloud services in collaboration with national/international high-performance data centers. We implement applications in the area of artificial intelligence and deep learning in collaboration with highly dynamic and innovative research teams. As a future employee you will be involved in research projects in the field of big data analytics.

Job Description

  • Contribution to the design, development and operation of cluster computing systems within an interactive team
  • Support of platform developers with porting projects onto the HPC system
  • Benchmarking and system tuning
  • Problem analysis and resolution
  • Cooperation with hardware and software vendors
  • Expected to stay current on HPC technologies like batch- and workload management systems (slurm, SGE, Univa) and parallel file systems (GPFS, Lustre, etc.)
  • Potential to advance HPC solutions like virtualization and containers technologies (OpenStack, Singularity, Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
  • Configuration and capacity management, provisioning and monitoring of the file system (file system based on ZFS)

Your Qualification

  • Bachelor or master (or comparable) degree in informatics, mathematics or a related subject from a university with internationally accepted quality standards
  • Strong knowledge of Linux, in particular installation and administration of systems
  • Strong skills in shell and script langages (Python, bash, etc.)
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Preferably good knowledge of written and spoken German
  • Structured and systematic working style as well as the ability to cooperate in teams
  • Strong orientation towards customer needs
  • Ideally basic networking skills – 10, 40 G Ethernet and Fiber-Channel
  • Optional automation and configuration tools (Ansible, Foreman, etc.)
