Today ACM/IEEE named Geoffrey C. Fox of Indiana University Bloomington as the recipient of the 2019 ACM-IEEE CS Ken Kennedy Award. “Fox was cited for foundational contributions to parallel computing methodology, algorithms and software, and data analysis, and their interfaces with broad classes of applications. The award will be presented at SC19 in Denver.”
ACM Announces Winners of 2019 ACM-IEEE CS George Michael Memorial HPC Fellowships

Today ACM announced that Milinda Shayamal Fernando of the University of Utah and Staci Smith of the University of Arizona are the recipients of the 2019 ACM-IEEE CS George Michael Memorial HPC Fellowships. “The fellowship honors exceptional PhD students throughout the world whose research focus is on high performance computing applications, networking, storage or large-scale data analytics using the most powerful computers that are currently available. The Fellowship includes a $5,000 honorarium and travel expenses to attend SC19 in Denver, where the Fellowships will be formally presented.”
Trilce Estrada wins 2019 ACM SIGHPC Emerging Woman Leader in Technical Computing Award

Today SIGHPC announced that Trilce Estrada is the 2019 ACM SIGHPC Emerging Woman Leader in Technical Computing award winner. Dr. Estrada is an associate professor in the department of Computer Science at the University of New Mexico. She is recognized for her innovative and transformative deployment of machine learning for knowledge discovery in molecular dynamic simulations and in situ analytics. “Her contributions in computational chemistry have transformed emerging paradigms into successful platforms for scientific discovery. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including an NSF CAREER Award for enabling distributed and in-situ analysis for multidimensional structured data.”
Announcing the 2019 ACM SIGHPC/Intel Computational and Data Science Fellowships

SIGHPC, in collaboration with Intel, has announced the six recipients of the ACM SIGHPC/Intel Computational and Data Science Fellowships for 2019. The fellowships are highly competitive, and are awarded after a rigorous merit review. For the first time in the fellowship’s history, all of the recipients are women. The fellowship is funded by Intel and is presented each year at the annual SC conference.
Pioneers in Deep Learning to Receive ACM Turing Award

Today ACM named Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun recipients of the 2018 ACM Turing Award for conceptual and engineering breakthroughs that have made deep neural networks a critical component of computing. “The ACM A.M. Turing Award, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Computing,” carries a $1 million prize, with financial support provided by Google, Inc. It is named for Alan M. Turing, the British mathematician who articulated the mathematical foundation and limits of computing.”
SIGHPC Announces Computational and Data Science Fellowships

Today SIGHPC announced the third annual recipients of the ACM SIGHPC/Intel Computational and Data Science Fellowship. Funded by Intel, the Fellowship was established to increase the diversity of students pursuing graduate degrees in data science and computational science.
Koen De Bosschere receives ACM SIGARCH Alan D. Berenbaum Distinguished Service Award

Today ACM announced that Koen De Bosschere from HiPEAC has won the Alan D. Berenbaum Distinguished Service Award. Recognized for outstanding service in the field of computer architecture and design, Professor De Bosschere was nominated for structuring and connecting the European research community in computer architecture and compilation. “Leading the HiPEAC community, contributing to the HiPEAC Vision and observing the its impact has always been a very rewarding experience for me,” said De Bosscher. “I feel very honored to receive the Alan D. Berenbaum Distinguished Service Award and I would like to dedicate it to all our members and the staff, without whom there would be no HiPEAC.”
Satoshi Matsuoka to receive High Performance Parallel Distributed Computation Achievement Award

PASC18 is soliciting high-quality original research papers related to scientific computing in any of the eight scientific domains represented at the conference (chemistry and materials, life sciences, physics, climate and weather, solid earth dynamics, engineering, computer science and applied mathematics, and emerging application domains). Papers that address aspects emphasizing the close coupling of data and computation in current and future high performance computing applications – as indicated by the theme of PASC18: Fast and Big Data, Fast and Big Computation – are particularly welcome.
