Red Hat steps up with Multi-Architecture Solutions for HPC

Mont-Blanc to Sponsor UPC Team at ISC 2018 Student Cluster Competition

The Mont-Blanc Project will once again sponsor a team at the upcoming ISC 2018 Student Cluster Competition. The sponsored team from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya / Barcelona Tech (UPC) will compete for the fourth time at ISC 2018, which takes place June 24– 28 in Frankfurt, Germany. “I am always impressed by the technical prowess exhibited by these young teams: the way they are turning our lessons into applied knowledge, through live benchmarking and on the fly troubleshooting is a great process and it triggers a positive loop in all of us.”

In this video from SC17, Mike Vildibill from Hewlett Packard Enterprise describes the company’s experiences engaging large HPC customers with prototype systems and highlight the value and benefit of running SUSE on the Apollo 70 platform. “Coming soon, the HPE Apollo70: is a powerful HPC platform. It offers a disruptive ARM HPC processor technology with maximum memory bandwidth, familiar management and performance tools, and the density and scalability required for large HPC cluster deployments.”

Atos Kicks off MontBlanc 2020 Project for Exascale

The MontBlanc 2020 project launched this week in Europe. As a sequel to a set of successful research projects into energy-efficient ARM-based computing, MontBlanc 2020 now begins an ambitious reach for Exascale. “The ambition of the consortium is to quickly industrialize our research. This is why we decided to rely on the Arm instruction set architecture (ISA), which is backed by a strong software ecosystem. By leveraging the current efforts, including the Mont-Blanc ecosystem and other international projects, we will benefit from the system software and applications required for successful usage” explained Said Derradji, Atos, coordinator of the Mont-Blanc 2020 project.”

Video: Comanche Collaboration Moves ARM HPC forward at National Labs

In this video from SC17 in Denver, Rick Stevens from Argonne leads a discussion about the Comanche Advanced Technology Collaboration. By initiating the Comanche collaboration, HPE brought together industry partners and leadership sites like Argonne National Laboratory to work in a joint development effort,” said HPE’s Chief Strategist for HPC and Technical Lead for the Advanced Development Team Nic Dubé. “This program represents one of the largest customer-driven prototyping efforts focused on the enablement of the HPC software stack for ARM. We look forward to further collaboration on the path to an open hardware and software ecosystem.”

Cavium Showcases ThunderX2 Arm-based Server Platforms for HPC

At SC17 in Denver, Cavium showcased a wide variety of ThunderX2 Arm-based server platforms for high performance computing. “ThunderX2 server SoC integrates fully out-of-order, high-performance custom cores supporting single and dual-socket configurations. It is optimized to drive high computational performance delivering outstanding memory bandwidth and memory capacity. The new line of ThunderX2 processors includes multiple SKUs for both scale up and scale out applications and is fully compliant with Armv8-A architecture specifications as well as the Arm Server Base System Architecture and Arm Server Base Boot Requirements standards.”

Argonne to Install Comanche System to Explore ARM Technology for HPC

Argonne National Laboratory is collaborating with HPE to provide system software expertise and a development ecosystem for a future high-performance computing system based on 64-bit ARM processors. “Argonne is working with HPE to evaluate early versions of chipmaker Cavium ARM ThunderX2 64-bit processors for the ARM ecosystem. Argonne is interested in evaluating the ARM ecosystem as a cost-effective and power-effective alternative to x86 architectures based on Intel CPUs, which currently dominate the high-performance computing market.”

Today at SC17, Hewlett Packard Enterprise announced new high-density compute and storage solutions that enable enterprises to harness the power of high performance computing and artificial intelligence applications. “Today, HPE is augmenting its proven supercomputing and large commercial HPC and AI capabilities with new high-density compute and storage solutions to accelerate market adoption by enabling organizations of all sizes to address challenges in HPC, big data, object storage and AI with more choice and flexibility.”
