Huawei Unveils “Industry’s Highest-Performance ARM-based CPU”

Today, Huawei announced “the industry’s highest-performance ARM-based CPU.” Called Kunpeng 920, the new CPU is designed to boost the development of computing in big data, distributed storage, and ARM-native application scenarios. “Kunpeng 920 integrates 64 cores at a frequency of 2.6 GHz. This chipset integrates 8-channel DDR4, and memory bandwidth exceeds incumbent offerings by 46%. System integration is also increased significantly through the two 100G RoCE ports. Kunpeng 920 supports PCIe 4.0 and CCIX interfaces, and provides 640 Gbps total bandwidth. In addition, the single-slot speed is twice that of the incumbent offering, effectively improving the performance of storage and various accelerators.”

DDN steps up with Professional Support for Lustre Clients on Arm Platforms

At SC18 in Dallas, DDN announced that its Whamcloud division is delivering professional support for Lustre clients on Arm architectures. With this support offering, organizations can confidently use Lustre in production environments, introduce new clients into existing Lustre infrastructures, and deploy Arm-based clusters of any size within test, development or production environments. As the use of Lustre continues to expand across HPC, artificial intelligence and data-intensive, performance-driven applications, the deployment of alternative architectures is on the rise.

Prior to this recent role, he spent a year consulting (HPC/Quantum/AI) and advising startup CEO’s in Silicon Valley. Earlier in his career, he founded Whamcloud, which he sold to Intel and served as the General Manager for Intel’s High Performance Data Division. Brent has also served on many advisory boards (SCxy, Cray Research, Westera) and founded the Student Cluster Competition.”

Interview: Brent Gorda on his New Role as Head of ARM HPC

Former Whamcloud CEO Brent Gorda has a new role as Senior Director for the HPC business at Arm. We caught up with Brent to learn more about the company’s plans to grow their business in the Datacenter, HPC space, and on to Exascale. “Arm partners ship over 20 billion cores a year(!) and our company is well-known for being the core IP in many designs at the edge. The trend toward the datacenter with Arm is clear, it’s an opportunity for the HPC market to take advantage of the considerable boost in performance via SVE and the Arm roadmap.”
