Fueled by the need for more compute power and scale, businesses around the world today are recognizing that a high performance computing infrastructure is vital to supporting the analytics applications of tomorrow.”

Fujitsu to Showcase Post-K Supercomputer CPU Prototype at ISC 2018

Today Fujitsu unveiled details about their ARM-powered Post K exascale supercomputer, which is planned for deployment at RIKEN in Japan sometime in 2021. Fujitsu has now completed the prototype CPU chip for the machine, which may be the fastest ever commencing functionality field trials. “The Post K processor will likely become the most powerful general-purpose CPU ever for HPC and AI,” said Satoshi Matsuoka from RIKEN on his blog this week.

ARM goes Big: HPE Builds Petaflop Supercomputer for Sandia

Today HPE announced plans to deliver the world’s largest Arm supercomputer. As part of the Vanguard program, Astra, the new Arm-based system, will be used by the NNSA to run advanced modeling and simulation workloads for addressing areas such as national security, energy and science. “By introducing Arm processors with the HPE Apollo 70, a purpose-built HPC architecture, we are bringing powerful elements, like optimal memory performance and greater density, to supercomputers that existing technologies in the market cannot match,” said Mike Vildibill, vice president, Advanced Technologies Group, HPE.

Radio Free HPC Looks at the New Coral-2 RFP for Exascale Computers

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team looks at the new Department of Energy’s RFP for Exascale Computers. “As far as predictions go, Dan thinks one machine will go to IBM and the other will go to Intel. Rich thinks HPE will win one of the bids with an ARM-based system designed around The Machine memory-centric architecture. They have a wager, so listen in to find out where the smart money is.”

HPE Teams with University of Bristol for ARM-based HPC

Today the University of Bristol announced an initiative to accelerate the adoption of
ARM-based supercomputers in the UK. “HPE is excited to work with Arm, SUSE, and other key partners to offer the HPC community a fresh alternative for high performance computing which we believe will stimulate the industry to develop increasingly performant and efficient supercomputing solutions. By investing in this deployment through the Catalyst UK programme, HPE and our partners will drive both digital transformation and sustainable economic growth through new innovation and scientific discovery.”

New Arm-based Workstation Opens the Doors for HPC Developers

Today GIGABYTE Technology announced the availability of ThunderXStation: the industry’s first 64-bit Armv8 workstation platform based on Cavium’s flagship ThunderX2 processor. “ThunderXStation is an ideal platform for Arm software developers across networking, embedded, mobile, and IoT verticals. We are delighted to be working closely with GIGABYTE on this, and we look forward to supporting them on a number of innovative new platforms.”

Video: How EuroEXA is Paving the Way to Exascale

In this video, Georgios Goumas the University of Athens describes how the EuroEXA project is working to develop the exascale computers in Europe. “To accomplish this, the project takes a holistic approach innovating both across the technology and the application/system software pillars. EuroEXA proposes a balanced architecture for compute and data-intensive applications, that builds on top of cost-efficient, modular-integration enabled by novel inter-die links, utilises a novel processing unit and embraces FPGA acceleration for computational, networking and storage operations.”

The Mont-Blanc project: Updates from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center

Filippo Mantovani from BSC gave this talk at the GoingARM workshop at SC17. “Since 2011, Mont-Blanc has pushed the adoption of Arm technology in High Performance Computing, deploying Arm-based prototypes, enhancing system software ecosystem and projecting performance of current systems for developing new, more powerful and less power hungry HPC computing platforms based on Arm SoC. In this talk, Filippo introduces the last Mont-Blanc system, called Dibona, designed and integrated by the coordinator and industrial partner of the project, Bull/ATOS.”

HPC Processor Competition Heats Up

In this special guest feature, Robert Roe from Scientific Computing World explores efforts to diversify the HPC processor market. “With the arrival of Arm and now the reintroduction of AMD to HPC, there are signs of new life in an HPC processor market that has been dominated by Intel Xeon processors for a number of years.”

First Public Disclosure of Isambard Supercomputer Performance Results

Prof. Simon McIntosh-Smith from the University of Bristol gave this talk at the GoingARM Workshop. “Isambard is a unique system that will enable direct ‘apples-to-apples’ comparisons across architectures, thus enabling UK scientists to better understand which architecture best suits their application.”
