The Hyperion-insideHPC Interviews: Rich Brueckner and Doug Ball Talk CFD, Autonomous Mobility and Driving Down HPC Package Sizing

Doug Ball is a leading expert in computational fluid dynamics and aerodynamic engineering, disciplines he became involved with more than 40 years ago. In this interview with the late Rich Brueckner of insideHPC, Ball discusses the increased scale and model complexity that HPC technology has come to handle and, looking to the future, his anticipation […]

Car as ‘Computing Device’: Mercedes-Benz and Nvidia Team to Build Software-defined Vehicles for 2024

Nvidia and Mercedes-Benz today said they plan to create an in-vehicle computing system and AI infrastructure for 2024 Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with “upgradable automated driving functions.” The resulting cars and trucks will be capable of automated address-to-address driving of regular routes, such as commutes and repeat deliveries, according to the companies.

Rugged COTS Platform Takes On Fast-Changing Needs of Self-Driving Trucks

This white paper by Advantech, “Rugged COTS Platform Takes On Fast-Changing Needs of Self-Driving Trucks” discusses how the fast-changing needs of autonomous vehicles are forcing compute platforms to evolve. Advantech and Crystal Group are teaming up to power that evolution based on AV trends, compute requirements, and a rugged COTS philosophy converging for breakthrough innovation in self-driving truck designs.

NVIDIA Unveils Advanced, Software-Defined Platform for Autonomous Machines

Today NVIDIA introduced NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin, a highly advanced software-defined platform for autonomous vehicles and robots. “The platform is powered by a new system-on-a-chip (SoC) called Orin, which consists of 17 billion transistors and is the result of billions of dollars in R&D investment over a four-year period. The Orin SoC integrates NVIDIA’s next-generation GPU architecture and Arm Hercules CPU cores, as well as new deep learning and computer vision accelerators that, in aggregate, deliver 200 trillion operations per second—nearly 7x the performance of NVIDIA’s previous generation Xavier SoC.”

Developing Next Generation Autonomous Vehicles using ‘AI on the Fly’

The quest to remove humans from behind the wheel with truly autonomous vehicles will drive billions of dollars in investment by car manufacturers and transportation service providers to develop and acquire the required technology. In this sponsored post from One Stop Systems, Tim Miller, Vice President of Strategic Development, explores how autonomous vehicles will change the transportation landscape, and the role AI has in this shift.

Quantum Drives High Performance Storage at SC17

In this video from SC17, Molly Presley from Quantum describes how the company’s high performance storage systems power HPC. “So why have an autonomous car at a Supercomputing show? The answer is Big Data. The Autonomous Stuff vehicle in this video is actually a rolling software development platform equipped with sensors that generate a whopping 30 Terabytes of data per day. Now just imagine if there were millions of vehicles on the road generating this kind of data. Only HPC could deal with that problem at scale. Companies like Quantum are stepping up to help solve this big data problem, both in the vehicle, on the edge, and in the datacenter.”
