Ayar Labs Joins DARPA PIPES Project as Intel Optical IO Provider

Optical startup Ayar Labs has been selected as Intel’s optical I/O solution partner for their recently awarded DARPA PIPES research project. “The goal of PIPES (Photonics in Package for Extreme Scalability) is to develop integrated optical I/O solutions co-packaged with next generation FPGA/CPU/GPU and accelerators in Multi-Chip Packages (MCP) to provide extreme data rates (input/output) at ultra-low power over much longer distances than supported by current technology. In the first phase of the project, the Ayar Labs TeraPHY chiplet will be co-packaged with an Intel FPGA using the AIB (Advanced Interconnect Bus) interface and Intel’s EMIB silicon-bridge packaging.”

Ayar Labs Readies Optical Interconnect Silicon to Meet Industry Demand

Ayar Labs is leveraging its recent Series A funding to bring optical interconnect silicon to the Cloud, HPC, and Telecommunication markets. “We’re seeing significant industry interest in optical chip-to-chip connectivity– based on our assessments, the Total Addressable Market for inter-chip optical interconnect is 4x the optical transceiver market,” said Charlie Wuischpard, CEO of Ayar Labs.”

HPC Veteran Charlie Wuischpard Joins Optical Startup Ayar Labs

Today Ayar Labs announced that Charlie Wuischpard, former vice president and general manager at Intel, has joined Ayar Labs as CEO and a member of the board of directors. “With his track record of driving growth in both small and large companies, forming deep trusted relationships with high performance computing industry participants, and delivering value to stakeholders, we know he will lead Ayar Labs to growth in the advanced computing and data center markets.”
