EU Funds Eight Pre-exascale Supercomputers

The European Union has selected eight supercomputing centers to host pre-exascale supercomputers. “In total, 19 of the 28 countries participating in the Joint Undertaking will be part of the consortia operating the centers. Together with EU funds, it represents a total budget of € 840 million. The exact funding arrangements for the new supercomputers will be reflected in hosting agreements that will be signed soon.

Video: The First Catalan Quantum Computer

Pol Forn from the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre gave this talk at the BSC Annual Meeting. “QUANTIC is a joint venture between the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and the University of Barcelona. The research directions are focused on performing quantum computation in a laboratory of superconducting quantum circuits and studying new applications for quantum processors.”

Barcelona Supercomputing Centre opens Arm Centre of Excellence for HPC

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and Arm Research have signed a multi-year agreement to establish the Arm-BSC Centre of Excellence. The move reflects a long history of BSC pioneering Arm technologies in HPC with the MontBlanc project. “The establishment of this Centre of Excellence will enable us to continue our close collaboration in order to advance the presence of Arm technologies in High Performance Computing and High Performance Data Analytics in Europe and worldwide.”

BSC fosters EUCANCan Project to share and reuse cancer genomic data worldwide

Today the Barcelona Supercomputing Center announced it will foster the EUCANCan project to allow both research and cancer treatments to be shared and re-used by the European and Canadian scientific community. As demonstrated by earlier work, research that merges and reanalyzes  biomedical data from different studies significantly increases the chances of new discoveries.

Easy and Efficient Multilevel Checkpointing for Extreme Scale Systems

Leonardo Bautista from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center gave this talk at PASC18. “Extreme scale supercomputers offer thousands of computing nodes to their users to satisfy their computing needs. As the need for massively parallel computing increases in industry, computing centers are being forced to increase in size and to transition to new computing technologies. In this talk, we will discuss how to guarantee high reliability to high performance applications running in extreme scale supercomputers. In particular, we cover the tools necessary to implement scalable multilevel checkpointing for tightly coupled applications.”

The Simulation of the Behavior of the Human Brain using CUDA

Pedro Valero-Lara from BSC gave this talk at the GPU Technology Conference. “The attendees can learn about how the behavior of Human Brain is simulated by using current computers, and the different challenges which the implementation has to deal with. We cover the main steps of the simulation and the methodologies behind this simulation. In particular we highlight and focus on those transformations and optimizations carried out to achieve a good performance on NVIDIA GPUs.”

Mateo Valero on how RISC-V can play a major role in New Supercomputer Architectures

In this eeNews report, Mateo Valero, Director of the Barcelona Supercomputer center, explains how the RISC-V architecture can play a main role in new supercomputer architectures. Valero was the keynote speaker at the recent RISC-V Workshop in Barcelona. “Born in academia and research, RISC-V ISA delivers a new level of free, extensible software and hardware freedom on architecture, paving the way for the next 50 years of computing design and innovation.”

MareNostrum provides 470 million core hours to European scientists

The PRACE initiative continues to sponsor ground-breaking research in Europe. “In the 16th PRACE Call for Project Access, Spain has allocated 470 million core hours on MareNostrum to 17 projects led by scientists from different European countries. With this allocation, this is the second time in a row that this unique supercomputer – which is installed in a chapel – has been the largest contributor in number of core hours in the last two PRACE Call for Proposals.”

BSC to host the RISC-V Workshop on the Road to European Processor Initiative

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center will host the RISC-V Workshop next week, a gathering the open source processor design community to share RISC-V updates, projects and implementations. Founded in 2015, the RISC-V Foundation comprises more than 100 members building the first open, collaborative community of software and hardware innovators powering innovation at the edge forward. BSC is promoting the adoption of RISC-V as a key partner of the European Processor Initiative, the consortium to design and develop Europe’s low-power processors and related technologies for extreme-scale, high-performance computing, which will be funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program.

BSC Adopts Supergeek Mascot to get kids into Supercomputing

Getting young people interested in STEM careers is a big concern for the HPC community. Maybe what we really need is a superhero. “A new mascot at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) has the mission to bring supercomputers closer to young people and stimulate their interest in science and technology.”
