DOE Picks Los Alamos Lab for $9.25M Nuclear Energy Research HPC Project

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the selection of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to lead a $9.25 million, five-year collaborative project in nuclear energy research through the Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program. SciDAC brings together researchers in science and energy with those in software development, applied mathematics, and computer science […]

On the Front Lines of AI Automation: Life Sciences and Chip Design

Given the right task, AI-driven machines can be empowered with supercharged IQs that make the smartest humans look dumb, or at least inefficient.  As we watch advances made in task automation, we see it burgeoning into fields previously (last week) thought unimaginable. Two recent reports underline the trend. In one, Carnegie Mellon University is teaming […]

Krell Institute Launches ‘Science in Parallel’ Podcast Focusing on Computational Science Innovators

AMES, IOWA – The Krell Institute is launching Science in Parallel, a podcast highlighting people and projects at the interface of science and computing. The first season features scientists who use computers to design alternative energy strategies, zero in on the chemistry of molecular surfaces, build quantum control algorithms and more. Along the way, listeners also will […]

Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center Receives NSF Grant for Nerve Cell Research

The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, a joint research effort by the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, recently received a $750,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, which will continue a lab-computer collaboration that accurately simulates communications between nerve cells and muscle cells. Stephen Meriney, professor of neuroscience in Pitt’s Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, […]

Maria Balcan to Receive Grace Murray Hopper Award for Significant Contributions to Machine Learning

Today ACM named Maria Florina Balcan of Carnegie Mellon University the recipient of the 2019 ACM Grace Murray Hopper Award for foundational and breakthrough contributions to minimally-supervised learning. “Although she is still in the early stages of her career, she has already established herself as the world leader in the theory of how AI systems can learn with limited supervision. More broadly, her work has realigned the foundations of machine learning, and consequently ushered in many new applications that have brought about leapfrog advances in this exciting area of artificial intelligence.”

HPE to Build Bridges-2 Supercomputer at PSC

NSF is funding $10 Million for a new supercomputer at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), a joint research center of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. We designed Bridges-2 to drive discoveries that will come from the rapid evolution of research, which increasingly needs new, scalable ways for combining large, complex data with high-performance simulation and modeling.”
