In this comprehensive technology white paper, written by Evaluator Group, Inc. on behalf of Lenovo, we delve into OpenShift, a key component of Red Hat’s portfolio of products designed for cloud native applications. It is built on top of Kubernetes, along with numerous other open source components, to deliver a consistent developer and operator platform that can run across a hybrid environment and scale to meet the demands of enterprises. Ceph open source storage technology is utliized by Red Hat to provide a data plane for Red Hat’s OpenShift environment.

How Ceph powers exciting research with Open Source

“As researchers seek scalable, high performance methods for storing data, Ceph is a powerful technology that needs to be at the top of their list. Ceph is an open-source software-defined storage platform. While it’s not often in the spotlight, it’s working hard behind the scenes, playing a crucial role in enabling ambitious, world-renowned projects such as CERN’s particle physics research, Immunity Bio’s cancer research, The Human Brain Project, MeerKat radio telescope, and more.”

SUSE joins iRODS Consortium

The SUSE announced that it has joined the iRODS Consortium, the foundation that leads development and support of the integrated Rule-Oriented Data System (iRODS) data management software. “SUSE has a rich history of Linux distribution and open source support, and partnering with them will allow iRODS to make even deeper connections throughout the open source community,” said Jason Coposky, Executive Director, iRODS Consortium. “SUSE Enterprise Storage integrated with iRODS’ data management capabilities creates a compelling and comprehensive solution stack.”

Excelero and Mellanox Boost Ceph Performance in OpenStack Cloud

OpenStack cloud provider Teuto.net has reported exceptional performance with low-latency block storage using deployed Excelero’s NVMesh Server SAN along with Mellanox SN2100 switches. As more customers need storage suitable for demanding databases that exceed Ceph’s performance, teuto.net achieved a 2,000% performance gain and 10x lower IO latency with NVMesh compared to Ceph while avoiding costly, less scalable appliances and proprietary vendor solutions.

Ceph on the Brain: Storage and Data-Movement Supporting the Human Brain Project

Adrian Tate from Cray and Stig Telfer from StackHPC gave this talk at the 2018 Swiss HPC Conference. “This talk will describe how Cray, StackHPC and the HBP co-designed a next-generation storage system based on Ceph, exploiting complex memory hierarchies and enabling next-generation mixed workload execution. We will describe the challenges, show performance data and detail the ways that a similar storage setup may be used in HPC systems of the future.”

Accelerating Ceph with RDMA and NVMe-oF

Haodong Tang from Intel gave this talk at the 2018 Open Fabrics Workshop. “Efficient network messenger is critical for today’s scale-out storage systems. Ceph is one of the most popular distributed storage system providing a scalable and reliable object, block and file storage services. As the explosive growth of Big Data continues, there’re strong demands leveraging Ceph build high performance & ultra-low latency storage solution in the cloud and bigdata environment. The traditional TCP/IP cannot satisfy this requirement, but Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) can.”

Red Hat Ceph Storage Powers Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham

On June 6, Red Hat announced that the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is using Red Hat Ceph Storage to support the growing needs of its research community. UAB selected Red Hat Ceph Storage because it offers researchers a flexible platform that can accommodate the vast amounts of data necessary to support future innovation and discovery. “UAB is a leader in computational research, with more than $500 million in annual research expenditures in areas including engineering, statistical genetics, genomics and next-generation gene sequencing,” said Curtis A. Carver Jr., VP and CIO at UAB. “Researchers and students aggregate, analyze, and store massive amounts of data, which is used to support groundbreaking medical discoveries from new cancer biomarkers to state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging techniques.”
