E4 Engineering Powers CERN with Quanta Cloud Technology

Over the last two years, E4 Computer Engineering and QCT have worked in close collaboration to supply CERN with thousands of server systems, cores and Petabytes of storage. “E4 has successfully supplied us with reliable and performant servers of the QCT brand over the last couple of years,” said Olof Bärring, Deputy Head of the computing facilities group, IT department, CERN. “The systems have proved to be suitable for different purposes ranging from High Throughput Computing (HTC) number crunching of physics data coming from LHC experiments to High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters for the CERN theory group. We are also very pleased with the reliable deliveries, the warranty support provided.”

ISC 2017 Distinguished Talks to Focus on Data Analytics in Manufacturing & Science

Today ISC 2017 announced that it’s Distinguished Talk series will focus on Data Analytics in manufacturing and scientific applications. One of the Distinguished Talks will be given by Dr. Sabina Jeschke from the Cybernetics Lab at the RWTH Aachen University on the topic of, “Robots in Crowds – Robots and Clouds.” Jeschke’s presentation will be followed by one from physicist Kerstin Tackmann, from the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) research center, who will discuss big data and machine learning techniques used for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.

CERN Selects T-Systems and Huawei for Helix Nebula Science Cloud

Today CERN announced that it has selected T-Systems and Huawei to design, prototype the pilot phase of the Helix Nebula Science Cloud. T-Systems and Huawei will develop a solution based on its Open Telekom Cloud public cloud service launched in March 2016 and which currently supports workloads from various leading enterprises, SMEs and public sector organizations.

Cray CS400 Supercomputer Coming to Baylor University

Today Cray announced that Baylor University has selected a Cray CS400 cluster supercomputer, further demonstrating its commitment to transformative research. The Cray system will serve as the primary high performance computing platform for Baylor researchers and will be supported by the Academic and Research Computing Services group (ARCS) of the Baylor University Libraries. The Cray CS400 cluster supercomputer will replace Baylor’s current HPC system, enhancing and expanding its capacity for computational research projects

CSCS in Switzerland to Celebrate 25 Years of Supercomputing

Over at CSCS, Simone Ulmer writes that the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre is turning twenty-five. First opened in 1991, CSCS supports users from Swiss and international institutions in their top-flight research and runs computers as a service facility for research associations and MeteoSwiss.

Video: Platform Independent Profiling of a QCD Code

“We present a procedure of implementing the intermediate profiling for openQCD code that will enable the global reduction of the cost of profiling and optimizing this code commonly used in the lattice QCD community. Our approach is based on well-known SimGrid simulator, which allows for fast and accurate performance predictions of the codes on HPC architectures. Additionally, accurate estimations of the program behavior on some future machines, not yet accessible to us, are anticipated.”

Why the HPC Industry will Converge on Europe at ISC 2016

In this special guest feature from Scientific Computing World, ISC’s Nages Sieslack highlights a convergence of technologies around HPC, a focus of the ISC High Performance conference, which takes place June 19-23 in Frankfurt. “In addition to the theme of convergent HPC technologies, this year’s conference will also offer two days of sessions in the industry track, specially designed to meet the interests of commercial users. Our focus is Industrie 4.0, a German strategic initiative conceived to take a leading role in pioneering industrial IT, which is currently revolutionizing engineering in the manufacturing sector.”

Géant Expands Europe’s National Research and Education Network

Géant, Europe’s collaboration on e-infrastructure and services for research and education, and operator of the network that interconnects Europe’s National Research and Education Networks (NRENs), has extended its 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) network into data centers.

Video: High Performance Computing for the LHC

In this video, Fermilab’s Dr. Don Lincoln gives us a sense of just how much data is involved and the incredible computer resources that make the LHC possible. “The LHC is the world’s highest energy particle accelerator and scientists use it to record an unprecedented amount of data. This data is recorded in electronic format and it requires an enormous computational infrastructure to convert the raw data into conclusions about the fundamental rules that govern matter.”

Video: Highlights of Day 3 at ISC 2015

In this video, attendees discuss highlights from Day 3 of the ISC 2015 conference, including the conference’s industry track, exhibit floor, and vendor parties. The program includes short interviews with Ed Seidel from NCSA, Sverre Jarp from CERN, Horst Simon from LBNL, Jack Dongarra from the University of Tennessee, and Jürgen Kohler from Daimler AG.
