@HPCpodcast: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategies – A How-to Guide for HPC Managers

While it’s safe to assume that most senior managers in the HPC community are in favor of hiring and promoting more women and people of color within their organizations, many don’t know how to make it happen. At last week’s annual meeting of the Dell Technologies HPC Community, Melyssa Fratkin of the Texas Advanced Computing Center offered this piece of advice: using same-old-same-old hiring practices won’t work.

Dell Technologies Interview: Getting ‘More Science Per Pound’ at Durham University’s COSMA HPC Service

[SPONSORED CONTENT]  In this interview with Dr. Alastair Basden of the UK’s Durham University, he discusses the latest activities at the university’s COSMA HPC Service as it tests and incorporates new high performance technologies on its way to exascale. A Dell Technologies HPC and AI Center of Excellence, the organization is driven to generate “more science per pound” out of its memory-intensive HPC infrastructure, Basden said, while also updating us on scientists’ cosmological work, including filling in the remaining gaps in the Big Bang Theory.

Dell Technologies Interview: R Systems and its HPC-on-Demand Partnership with Dell

HPC-as-a-Service is one of the hot growth sectors of the high performance computing industry. R Systems is a significant player in this arena, providing HPC-on-demand resources and technical expertise to commercial and institutional research clients in partnership with Dell HPC Cloud Services. R Systems offers bare-metal clusters and a variety of solutions for client’s HPC needs, including lease time on clusters for bursting, no charges for data ingress and egress, and HPC support and expertise for short-term and long-term projects (more details can be….

Dell Technologies Interview: Wirth Research Talks (and Walks) HPC for Cutting Carbon Footprints

[Sponsored Content]  In this interview, part of our series conducted on behalf of Dell Technologies, UK-based engineering firm Wirth Research talks about using HPC to cut its clients carbon footprints – specifically, supermarket companies.

But as Wirth’s Rob Rowsell explains, Wirth also walks the energy efficiency walk. Two years ago, when the firm decided to overhaul its engineering IT infrastructure, Wirth decided to house its Dell Technologies-based HPC gear (or “kit,” as Rowsell says) in geothermal-powered (zero carbon energy source) Verne Global, which is located in Iceland. The greenhouse gas cutting results Wirth delivers for its clients and for itself are impressive.

Dell Technologies Interview: Dell’s Jay Boisseau on Data Growth Outpacing Moore’s Law, the HPC-AI Divide-Convergence and Beating Zoom Fatigue

[SPONSORED CONTENT]  Jay Boisseau, HPC & AI Technology Strategist at Dell Technologies and organizer of the Dell Technologies HPC Community meetings, is one of the big personalities of HPC, someone who brings energy and insight to any gathering he’s a part of. In this insideHPC interview conducted on behalf of Dell, we talk with Boisseau about his career path, including serving as director of the Texas Advanced Computing Center, about big shifts and future trends in HPC and about the phenomenon, where HPC and AI intersect, of data growth rates outpacing Moore’s Law. He also disc uses his strategy for infusing life into the HPC Community meetings in an era of “Zoom fatigue,” including drawing inspiration from The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker, who, as Boisseau points out, probably never dreamed of the Zoom era.

Dell Technologies Interview: How Cambridge University Pushed the Wilkes3 Supercomputer to No. 4 on the Green500

[SPONSORED CONTENT]  In this interview conducted on behalf of Dell Technologies, insideHPC spoke with Dr. Paul Calleja, director of Research Computing Services at the University of Cambridge, about the Wilkes3 supercomputer, currently ranked no. 4 on the Green500 list of the world’ most energy efficient supercomputers. Dr. Calleja discusses how he and his team developed an low-power strategy for the 80-node Wilkes3 system by the adoption of GPUs and lower clock speeds balanced against high throughput. He also explains how the Dell PowerEdge XE8545 -based cluster, which utilizes AMD EPYC CPUs and the Mellanox InfiniBand interconnect, fits within the university’s larger, heterogeneous Cumulus system, comprised of 2,500 Intel x86 servers.

Dell Technologies Interview: How the Anvil Cluster Supports Purdue and NSF XSEDE Researchers – Including Non-Traditional HPC Users

In this interview conducted on behalf of Dell Technologies, insideHPC spoke with Carol Song, who leads the Scientific Solutions Group at Purdue University’s Rosen Center for Advanced Computing and is a senior research scientist for Information Technology at Purdue (ITaP) Research Computing. Song is the principal investigator (PI) and project director for Purdue’s Anvil supercomputing cluster, built in partnership with Dell.
