Thomas Sterling Eulogizes Rich Brueckner, Ann Redelfs, Steve Tuecke, Lucy Nowell: 4 Leaders Lost to the HPC Community

At his annual keynote address closing out the ISC 2020 conference, Thomas Sterling, Professor of Intelligent Systems Engineering at the University of Indiana, eulogized four members of the HPC community who died over the past year. Here are excerpts from his remarks: It’s my sad duty to, but certainly a responsibility, to note some of […]

AMD to Power Cray Shasta Supercomputer at Navy DSRC

The Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) is upgrading its supercomputing capabilities with a new Cray Shasta system powered by AMD EPYC processors. The system, the HPCMP’s first with more than 10 PetaFLOPS of peak computational performance, will be installed at the Navy’s DSRC’s facility at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi and will serve users from all of the services and agencies of the Department.

Federal Agencies Tap New Data Streaming Solution from PSSC Labs

Federal agencies are leveraging the new CyberRax Data Flow Pipeline from PSSC Labs to achieve their goals. Certified compatible with Cloudera Dataflow (and Apache NiFi), CyberRax DataFlow Pipeline provides high-speed data ingestion, edge data collection, and IoT scale streaming data processing…in real time. “The U.S. Air Force recently deployed several CyerRax Data Flow Pipelines for both their NIPR and SIPR networks.”

OSS Awarded $36 Million Contract to Provide Flash Storage Arrays for Military Radar Application

Today One Stop Systems announced a five-year sole source agreement valued at $36 million to provide flash storage arrays to a prime contractor for the U.S. Navy. The systems will be used within state-of-the-art Navy surveillance aircraft deployed worldwide. “Under the agreement, OSS will supply full mil-spec flash storage systems that include removable canisters, allowing collected data to be removed from the aircraft and transferred to ground stations. The systems store real-time data collected from advanced airborne sensors (AAS), including radar and other sensors. The contract includes airborne and ground systems, spare canisters and support services.”

AMD to Power Two Cray CS500 Systems at Army Research Centers

Today Cray announced that the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) has selected two Cray CS500 systems for its High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) annual technology procurement known as TI-18. The Army Research Lab (ARL) and the U.S. Army Engineering and Research Development Center (ERDC) will each deploy a Cray CS500 to help serve the U.S. through accelerated research in science and technology. The two contracts are valued at more than $46M and the CS500 systems are expected to be delivered to ARL and ERDC in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Defense Department is testing a Shipping Container Supercomputer

The Defense Department is testing a Shipping Container Supercomputer. “The $12 million contract provides for a supercomputing system housed in a shipping container with on-board power conditioning and cooling, along with the corresponding hardware and software maintenance services. The “HPC in a Container” is designed to be deployable to the tactical edge and deployment opportunities to remote locations are currently being evaluated.”

A World of Opportunities for HPC and AI

In this special guest feature, Dr. Eng Lim Goh from HPE shares the endless possibilities of supercomputing and AI, and the challenges that stand in the way. “Can AI systems continue to learn and evolve based on historical data, and then predict – with breakneck speed – the exact time to buy or sell stocks? Of course they can – and with precision that comes close to replicating other predictive models, and usually in a fraction of the time.”

HPE wins $57 Million Supercomputing Contract for DoD Modernization Program

Today HPE announced it has been selected to provide new supercomputers for the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) to accelerate the development and acquisition of advanced national security capabilities. “The DoD’s continuous investment in supercomputing innovation is a clear testament to this development and an important contribution to U.S. national security. HPE has been a strategic partner with the HPCMP for two decades, and we are proud that the DoD now significantly extends this partnership, acknowledging HPE’s sustained leadership in high performance computing.”
