An Update on the European Processor Initiative

Jean-Marc Denis from EPI gave this talk at the HPC User Forum. “The EPI project aims to deliver a high-performance, low-power processor, implementing vector instructions and specific accelerators with high bandwidth memory access. The EPI processor will also meet high security and safety requirements. This will be achieved through intensive use of simulation, development of a complete software stack and tape-out in the most advanced semiconductor process node.”
EuroHPC – The European Strategy for Supercomputing

How the European Processor Initiative is Leveraging RISC-V for the Future of Supercomputing

In this special guest feature, Calista Redmond writes that the European Processor Initiative is designing an HPC accelerator based on RISC-V. “The accelerator will be designed for high throughput and power efficiency within the general purpose processor (GPP) chip. The EPI explains that using RISC-V enables the program to leverage “open source resources at [the] hardware architecture level and software level, as well as ensuring independence from non-European patented computing technologies.”

EPI delivers first design for high-performance processor

The European Processor Initiative (EPI) has delivered its first architectural design to the European Commission and is welcoming new partners. “Energy efficient high-performance families of EPI processors will include most advanced general-purpose and accelerator cores that will deliver unprecedented processing capabilities, enabling EU researchers from academia and industry to most efficiently address global challenges. The business sustainability of the initiative is supported by carefully balanced target markets, with primary focus on exascale HPC/AI and automotive markets.”

In this video from ICT2018, Mateo Valero from the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre presents: HPC and the Future of Computing. “Europe is going in the right direction with EuroHPC and this must be sustained in the long-term. BSC fully supports this initiative and will do everything we can to help make it a success,” said Professor Valero, noting that much had been done since his previous keynote at ICT 2015 in Lisbon, where he already stressed the importance of developing European HPC technology.”

Component prices have gone up, so there may be multiple contributing factors implying richer configurations are being deployed. Dan thinks IDC might be adjusting their model, but we can’t be sure from here. He doesn’t see how a company like Inspur can jack their business by 112 percent in a single year.
