EPI delivers first design for high-performance processor

The European Processor Initiative (EPI) has delivered its first architectural design to the European Commission and is welcoming new partners. “Energy efficient high-performance families of EPI processors will include most advanced general-purpose and accelerator cores that will deliver unprecedented processing capabilities, enabling EU researchers from academia and industry to most efficiently address global challenges. The business sustainability of the initiative is supported by carefully balanced target markets, with primary focus on exascale HPC/AI and automotive markets.”

European Processor Initiative: The EuroHPC Industrial Cornerstone

Mario Kovač from EPI gave this talk at the Swiss HPC Conference. “EPI will provide to the European industry and research a competitive HPC platform and data processing solutions at world class level in the best interest of data security and ownership. Thanks to such new European technologies, European scientists and industry will be able to access exceptional levels of energy-efficient computing performance. This will benefit Europe’s scientific leadership, industrial competitiveness, engineering skills and know-how and the society as whole.”

Video: HPC and the Future of Computing

In this video from ICT2018, Mateo Valero from the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre presents: HPC and the Future of Computing. “Europe is going in the right direction with EuroHPC and this must be sustained in the long-term. BSC fully supports this initiative and will do everything we can to help make it a success,” said Professor Valero, noting that much had been done since his previous keynote at ICT 2015 in Lisbon, where he already stressed the importance of developing European HPC technology.”

Radio Free HPC Looks at IDC Server Market Numbers Reflecting Remarkable Growth from Cloud

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team looks at the latest server watch numbers from IDC. The takeaway? The Server industry up 43 percent year over year. Component prices have gone up, so there may be multiple contributing factors implying richer configurations are being deployed. Dan thinks IDC might be adjusting their model, but we can’t be sure from here. He doesn’t see how a company like Inspur can jack their business by 112 percent in a single year. This is simply unprecedented growth. Welcome to the Server Business in the Age of Cloud.

Video: The European Processor Initiative

Jean-Marc Denis from EPI gave this talk at the HPC User Forum in Detroit. “The European Commission announces the selection of the Consortium European Processor Initiative to co-design, develop and bring on the market a European low-power microprocessor. This technology, with drastically better performance and power, is one of the core elements needed for the development of the European Exascale machine.”

Video: EuroHPC and European HPC Strategy

Leonardo Flores from the European Commission presents: EuroHPC and European HPC Strategy. “EuroHPC is a joint collaboration between European countries and the European Union about developing and supporting exascale supercomputing by 2022/2023. The EuroHPC declaration, signed on March 23 2017 signed by 7 countries marked the beginning of EuroHPC. Meanwhile there are 21 countries that have joined EuroHPC.”

European Processor Initiative to develop chip for future supercomputers

Today the European Commission announced more details on the European Processor Initiative to co-design, develop and bring on the market a low-power microprocessor. “This technology, with drastically better performance and power, is one of the core elements needed for the development of the European Exascale machine. We expect to achieve unprecedented levels of performance at very low power, and EPI’s HPC and automotive industrial partners are already considering the EPI platform for their product roadmaps,” said Philippe Notton, the EPI General Manager.

Radio Free HPC Looks at the European Processor Initiative

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team looks at the European Processor Initiative, an effort to design a build an exascale computer based around European technology. “According to an interview in Primeur Magazine with EPI project coordinator Philippe Notton from Atos, the project involves not only a processor, but an accelerator as well. Will it be based on ARM, OpenPOWER, or something else like RISC-V? We will have to wait and see.”
