DOD Inks $32M HPC Deal with Liqid; Forms AI Partnership with DOE, Microsoft

The Department of Defense has made HPC news twice in the last few days – in one, the Army will spend $32 million on supercomputing technology from composable infrastructure vendor Liqid; in the other, DOD will partner with the Department of Energy and Microsoft to develop AI algorithms to support natural disaster first responders. In […]

Samsung, IBM, Tencent Lead AI Patent Race, Europe Lags

Three companies – Samsung, IBM and Tencent – dominate the global AI patent race over the past 10 years, while fierce competition between the U.S, and China overshadows other countries and regions, including the EU. These are the key findings of OxFirst, a specialist in IP law and economics (and spin out of Oxford University), […]

Azure HPC Cache: File caching for high performance computing

In this video, Scott Jeschonek from Microsoft describes the performance advantages of Azure HPC Cache. “Whether you are rendering a movie scene, searching for variants in a genome, or running machine learning against a data set, HPC Cache can provide very low latency high throughput access to the required file data. Even more, your data can remain on its Network Attached Storage (NAS) environment in your data center while you drive your jobs into Azure Compute.”

Podcast: ColdQuanta Serves Up Some Bose-Einstein Condensate

“ColdQuanta is headed by an old pal of ours Bo Ewald and has just come out of stealth mode into the glaring spotlight of RadioFreeHPC. When you freeze a gas of Bosons at low density to near zero you start to get macroscopic access to microscopic quantum mechanical effects, which is a pretty big deal. With the quantum mechanics start, you can control it, change it, and get computations out of it. The secret sauce for ColdQuanta is served cold, all the way down into the micro-kelvins and kept very locally, which makes it easier to get your condensate.”

Newly named Ethernet Technology Consortium Announces 800 Gigabit Ethernet Specification

The 25 Gigabit Ethernet Consortium, originally established to develop 25, 50 and 100 Gbps Ethernet specifications, announced today it has changed its name to the Ethernet Technology Consortium in order to reflect a new focus on higher-speed Ethernet technologies. “Ethernet is evolving very quickly and as a group, we felt that having 25G in the name was too constraining for the scope of the consortium,” said Brad Booth, chair of the Ethernet Technology Consortium. “We wanted to open that up so that the industry could have an organization that could enhance Ethernet specifications for new and developing markets.”

Rescale Partners with Google Cloud and Azure to Offer Cloud HPC for COVID-19 Researchers

Today Rescale, in cooperation with Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, announced a new program that immediately offers high performance computing resources at no cost to teams working to develop test kits and vaccines for COVID-19. “Those working on coronavirus vaccines and testing who would benefit from HPC in the cloud at no cost should apply at techagainstcovid.com. Researchers can rapidly run simulations in the cloud without setup time or IT teams using Rescale’s turnkey platform combined with cloud computing resources from Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure.”

AMD Powers Azure HBv2 Virtual Machines for HPC Workloads

The AMD and Microsoft partnership continues to expand this week with the launch of Microsoft Azure NVv4 Virtual Machines. Powered by 2nd Gen AMD EPYC  Processors and AMD Radeon Instinct GPUs, the powerful new VMs are now generally available to customers in South Central US, East US, and West Europe regions, with additional regions planned for the coming months. “These VMs, the first in the industry to be powered by both AMD EPYC CPUs and Radeon Instinct GPUs, enable customers to scale virtual desktops in the cloud that support a variety of workloads.”

UberCloud Publishes Compendium Of Case Studies in Life Sciences

If you are considering moving some of your HPC workload to the Cloud, nothing leads the way like a good set of case studies in your scientific domain. To this end, our good friends at the UberCloud have published a compendium entitled, Exploring Life Sciences in the Cloud. The document includes 36 CFD case studies summarizing HPC Cloud projects that the UberCloud has performed together with the engineering community over the last six years. “From the 220 cloud experiments we have done so far, we selected 15 case studies related to the life sciences. We document the results of these research teams, their applications, findings, challenges, lessons learned, and recommendations.”

Podcast: The Turing Machine is Sequential, so how about a Parallel Machine?

The @RadioFreeHPC team is joined by the folks at MemComputing, a San Diego startup that’s built a new parallel foundation for computing. It calls it the universal memcomputing machine, and a realization of self-organizing circuits. “We analytically prove that the memory properties of UMMs endow them with universal computing power—they are Turing-complete.”
