Offering Bare-Metal Performance and Scalability on Cloud: The Azure-HPC Approach

Jithin Jose from Microsoft gave this talk at the MVAPICH User Group. “This talk focuses on how HPC offerings in Azure address these challenges and explains the design pillars that allow Microsoft to offer “bare-metal performance and scalability” on the Microsoft Azure Cloud. This talk also covers the features of latest Microsoft Azure HPC offerings and provides in-depth performance insights and recommendations for using MVAPICH2 and MVAPICH2-X on Microsoft Azure.”

Intel Ships First 10nm Agilex FPGAs with Integrated Arm Processors

Today Intel announced that it has begun shipments of the first Intel Agilex field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to early access program customers. In what may be a surprise to many, the F-Series variant of the chip family also provides the option to integrate a quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 processor to provide high system integration. “Intel FPGAs have provided Microsoft tremendous value for accelerating real-time AI, networking, and other applications/infrastructure across Azure Cloud Services, Bing, and other data center services.”

PNNL Leads Quantum Nexus Summit in Seattle

Today a coalition led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Microsoft Quantum, and the University of Washington will convene in Seattle to launch the Northwest Quantum Nexus. The invite-only Summit will establish a center of geographic and intellectual gravity in the Northwest, where a talent pool can flourish and contribute to the quantum economy, through knowledge sharing, skill and experience development, research impacts, and community engagement. “By establishing this partnership in quantum computing, we are planting a seed in fertile ground. We are forming a nexus for nurturing a talent pool and establishing the quantum economy through knowledge sharing, skill and experience development, and community engagement.”

NVIDIA Quadro Comes to the Microsoft Azure Cloud

NVIDIA Quadro Virtual Workstations are now available on the Microsoft Azure Marketplace, enabling virtual workstation performance for more artists, engineers and designers. “Starting today, Microsoft Azure cloud customers in industries like architecture, entertainment, oil and gas, and manufacturing can easily deploy the advanced GPU-accelerated capabilities of Quadro Virtual Workstation (Quadro vWS) whenever, wherever they need it.”

UberCloud Now Available in Microsoft Azure Marketplace

Today the UberCloud announced the availability of UberCloud consulting services in the Microsoft Azure Marketplace, an online store providing applications and services for use on Microsoft Azure. UberCloud customers can now take advantage of the scalability, high availability, and security of Azure, with streamlined deployment and management. “UberCloud’s HPC software containers provide engineers with seamless and immediate access to the cloud,” said Wolfgang Gentzsch, President of TheUberCloud Inc.

Microsoft is Making Progress on Quantum Computing as a Service

Just one year after launch, Microsoft is touting their progress towards building Quantum Computing as a Service. “The Microsoft Quantum Development Kit is the fastest path to quantum development. Available for Linux, MacOS, and Windows, you now are just a few steps away from accessing local quantum simulators or in Azure.”

Microsoft Previews Avere vFXT for Azure

Over at the Microsoft Blog, Rebecca Thompson writes that Avere vFXT software for Azure delivers new possibilities for running HPC workloads in the cloud. “With this new software solution, you can now easily connect on-premises infrastructure to Azure compute or “lift and shift” file-based workloads in Azure to run between Azure blob in the same manner.”

UberCloud Works with ANSYS and Azure to Optimize Bioreactors

Over at The UberCloud, Wolfgang Gentzsch writes that researchers are using HPC in the Cloud in a revolutionary new way for the design of bioreactors. “It’s amazing to think of all the products created in bioreactors. The medications we take, the beer we drink and the yogurt we eat are all made in bioreactors optimized for the manufacturing of these products. Unfortunately, optimizations take a lot of work and data. In a new HPC Cloud project, engineers from ANSYS with support from UberCloud performed an extensive Design of Experiments in Microsoft’s Azure Cloud.”

Microsoft Powers the Move to the HPC Cloud at PASC18

In this video from PASC18 in Basel, Dr. Lukasz Miroslaw from Microsoft describes how the company is helping customers move HPC & Big Compute workloads to the Cloud. “High performance computing, artificial intelligence, and other advanced workloads are increasingly important to companies across all industries. But rapid changes in technology and workloads make it challenging for HPC teams to provide the resources their users need. Microsoft Azure provides one cloud for every HPC workload so that users can get the resources they need when they need them and only pay for what’s used.”

How Microsoft is Moving Forward with HPC in the Cloud

In this video from the Dell EMC HPC Community Meeting, Tim Carroll from Microsoft describes how the company is working with Dell EMC to move AI and HPC workloads to the Cloud. “The Dell EMC Cloud for Microsoft Azure Stack is a hybrid cloud platform for delivering infrastructure and platform as a service (IaaS and PaaS) with a consistent Azure experience on-premises and in the public cloud. Organizations can access, create, and share application services securely across Azure and Azure Stack for both HPC & AI applications.”
