Frontera: The Next Generation NSF HPC Resource, and Why HPC Still isn’t the Cloud

Dan Stanzione from TACC gave this talk at the MVAPICH User Group. “In this talk, I will describe the main components of the award: the Phase 1 system, “Frontera”, the plans for facility operations and scientific support for the next five years, and the plans to design a Phase 2 system in the mid-2020s to be the NSF Leadership system for the latter half of the decade, with capabilities 10x beyond Frontera. The talk will also discuss the key role MVAPICH and Infiniband play in the project, and why the workload for HPC still can’t fit effectively on the cloud without advanced networking support.”

Agenda Posted: MVAPICH User Group (MUG) Meeting in Ohio

The MVAPICH User Group Meeting (MUG 2019) has published its Speaker Agenda. The event will take place from August 19-21 in Columbus, Ohio. “MUG aims to bring together MVAPICH2 users, researchers, developers, and system administrators to share their experience and knowledge and learn from each other. The event includes Keynote Talks, Invited Tutorials, Invited Talks, Contributed Presentations, Open MIC session, hands-on sessions  MVAPICH developers, etc.”

Call for Presentations: MVAPICH User Group in August

The 7th annual MVAPICH User Group (MUG) meeting has issued its Call for Presentations. MUG will take place from August 19-21, 2019 in Columbus, Ohio. “MUG aims to bring together MVAPICH2 users, researchers, developers, and system administrators to share their experience and knowledge and learn from each other. The event includes keynote talks, invited tutorials, invited talks, contributed presentations, open MIC session, hands-on sessions with MVAPICH developers, etc.”

OSC Hosts MVAPICH Users Group this week

A broad array of HPC enthusiasts have gathered at the Ohio Supercomputer Center this week for the sixth meeting of the MVAPICH Users Group (MUG). “The Network-Based Computing Research Group is lead by DK Panda, a professor and university distinguished scholar of computer science at The Ohio State University, created and enhances the popular MVAPICH HPC system software package.”

HPC Network Stack on ARM

Pavel Shamis from ARM gave this talk at the MVAPICH User Group. “With the emerging availability HPC solutions based on ARM CPU architecture, it is important to understand how ARM integrates with the RDMA hardware and HPC network software stack. In this talk, we will overview ARM architecture and system software stack. We will discuss how ARM CPU interacts with network devices and accelerators. In addition, we will share our experience in enabling RDMA software stack and one-sided communication libraries (Open UCX, OpenSHMEM/SHMEM) on ARM and share preliminary evaluation results.”

Scaling Deep Learning Algorithms on Extreme Scale Architectures

Abhinav Vishnu from PNNL gave this talk at the MVAPICH User Group. “Deep Learning (DL) is ubiquitous. Yet leveraging distributed memory systems for DL algorithms is incredibly hard. In this talk, we will present approaches to bridge this critical gap. Our results will include validation on several US supercomputer sites such as Berkeley’s NERSC, Oak Ridge Leadership Class Facility, and PNNL Institutional Computing.”

Overview of the MVAPICH Project and Future Roadmap

“This talk will provide an overview of the MVAPICH project (past, present and future). Future roadmap and features for upcoming releases of the MVAPICH2 software family (including MVAPICH2-X, MVAPICH2-GDR, MVAPICH2-Virt, MVAPICH2-EA and MVAPICH2-MIC) will be presented. Current status and future plans for OSU INAM, OEMT and OMB will also be presented.”

OSC Hosts fifth MVAPICH Users Group

A broad array of system administrators, developers, researchers and students who share an interest in the MVAPICH open-source library for high performance computing will gather this week for the fifth meeting of the MVAPICH Users Group (MUG). “Dr. Panda’s library is a cornerstone for HPC machines around the world, including OSC’s systems and many of the Top 500,” said Dave Hudak, Ph.D., interim executive director of OSC. “We’ve gained a lot of insight and expertise from partnering with DK and his research group throughout the years.”

Video: User Managed Virtual Clusters in Comet

Rick Wagner from SDSC presented this talk at the the 4th Annual MVAPICH User Group. “At SDSC, we have created a novel framework and infrastructure by providing virtual HPC clusters to projects using the NSF sponsored Comet supercomputer. Managing virtual clusters on Comet is similar to managing a bare-metal cluster in terms of processes and tools that are employed. This is beneficial because such processes and tools are familiar to cluster administrators.”

Exascale Computing – What are the Goals and the Baseline?

Thomas Schulthess presented this talk at the MVAPICH User Group. “Implementation of exascale computing will be different in that application performance is supposed to play a central role in determining the system performance, rather than just considering floating point performance of the high-performance Linpack benchmark. This immediately raises the question as to what the yardstick will be, by which we measure progress towards exascale computing. I will discuss what type of performance improvements will be needed to reach kilometer-scale global climate and weather simulations. This challenge will probably require more than exascale performance.”
