A Brief Overview of the Strengths and Weaknesses Artificial Intelligence

In this contributed article, editorial consultant Jelani Harper suggests that since there are strengths and challenges for each form of AI, prudent organizations will combine these approaches for the most effective results. Certain solutions in this space combine vector databases and applications of LLMs alongside knowledge graph environs, which are ideal for employing Graph Neural Networks and other forms of advanced machine learning.

MIT Paper Sheds Light on How Neural Networks Think

MIT researchers have developed a new general-purpose technique sheds light on inner workings of neural nets trained to process language. “During training, a neural net continually readjusts thousands of internal parameters until it can reliably perform some task, such as identifying objects in digital images or translating text from one language to another. But on their own, the final values of those parameters say very little about how the neural net does what it does.”

Video: What is Wrong with Convolutional Neural Nets?

Geoffrey Hinton from the University of Toronto gave this talk at the Vector Institute. “What is Wrong with ‘standard’ Convolutional Neural Nets? They have too few levels of structure: Neurons, Layers, and Whole Nets. We need to group neurons in each layer in ‘capsules’ that do a lot of internal computation and then output a compact result.”

Pikazo: Deep Neural Network Art on Intel Architecture

In this video from the Intel HPC Developer Conference, Noah Rosenberg and Karl Stiefvater from Pikazo describe the company’s innovative Pikazo App for smartphones. “Pikazo was developed in 2015 using neural style transfer algorithms. It is a collaboration between human, machine, and our concept of art. It is a universal art machine that paints any image in the style of any other, producing sometimes-beautiful, sometimes-disturbing, always-surprising artworks. Pikazo allows novice artists to create impressive imagery via a technique known as neural style transfer.”
