The Ohio State University is seeking an HPC Security Engineer in our Job of the Week. “OSC provides high-performance computing services for university researchers and industrial clients. The HPC Systems Team delivers OSC’s production HPC systems, networking, and storage services through system design, procurement, deployment, security, and systems administration. This security engineer position supports the overall mission of the team and in particular duties related to systems security and implementation of security policy.”

Supercomputing the Impact of Loan Forgiveness Programs

Graduate Assistant Hongyu Chen used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth to model individuals’ education, career, borrowing, and spending decisions based on whether or not they were part of a loan forgiveness program. Chen wrote a program that ran simulations of over 151 parameters on a population of approximately 2,500 individuals between the ages of 18 to 65 during different periods of their lives. “The estimation takes around 10 years if I’m running just one single computer,” Chen said. “That’s why I have to use the cluster of computers, like the supercomputer, that use multiple cores at the same time, so that saves me a lot of time.”

The ExaComm 2017 Workshop at ISC High Performance has posted its Full Agenda. As the Third International Workshop on Communication Architectures for HPC, Big Data, Deep Learning and Clouds at Extreme Scale, the one day workshop takes place at the Frankfurt Marriott Hotel on Thursday, June 22. “The objectives of this workshop will be to share the experiences of the members of this community and to learn the opportunities and challenges in the design trends for exascale communication architectures.”

Rock Stars of HPC: DK Panda

As our newest Rock Star of HPC, DK Panda sat down with us to discuss his passion for teaching High Performance Computing. “During the last several years, HPC systems have been going through rapid changes to incorporate accelerators. The main software challenges for such systems have been to provide efficient support for programming models with high performance and high productivity. For NVIDIA-GPU based systems, seven years back, my team introduced a novel `CUDA-aware MPI’ concept. This paradigm allows complete freedom to application developers for not using CUDA calls to perform data movement.”
