Ohio Supercomputer Center hosts Statewide User Group

On April 19, researchers gathered at the Ohio Supercomputer Center for the Statewide Users Group (SUG) spring conference to collaborate and share ideas with peers and OSC staff. “SUG encompasses all OSC clients and receives direction from the SUG executive committee, a volunteer group composed of the Ohio university faculty who provide OSC’s leadership with program and policy advice and direction to ensure a productive environment for research.”

OSC to Deploy Pitzer Cluster built by Dell EMC

Today the Ohio Supercomputer Center announced plans to deploy the center’s newest, most efficient supercomputer system, the liquid-cooled, Dell EMC-built Pitzer Cluster. “Ohio continues to make significant investments in the Ohio Supercomputer Center to benefit higher education institutions and industry throughout the state by making additional high performance computing (HPC) services available,” said John Carey, chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education. “This newest supercomputer system gives researchers yet another powerful tool to accelerate innovation.”

OSC Hosts MVAPICH Users Group this week

A broad array of HPC enthusiasts have gathered at the Ohio Supercomputer Center this week for the sixth meeting of the MVAPICH Users Group (MUG). “The Network-Based Computing Research Group is lead by DK Panda, a professor and university distinguished scholar of computer science at The Ohio State University, created and enhances the popular MVAPICH HPC system software package.”

HPC Speeds NASCAR at OSC

In this video, Ray Leto from Total Sim LLC describes how his firm uses supercomputing resources at OSC to speed NASCAR simulations. “Designers and engineers utilizing common CAD or CAE software on desktop computers often encounter limitations in the modeling and simulation (M&S) they can efficiently perform. High Performance Computing provides an improvement in computational capacity compared to typical general-purpose computers. The increased power and speed that HPC provides allows more detailed models to be simulated faster.”

Each summer the Ohio Supercomputer Center offers summer programs for high school students and middle school girls interested in experiencing the dynamic fields of high performance computing and networking. Applications for Summer 2017 are due April 7.

OnDemand 3.0 Portal to Power Owens Supercomputer at OSC

“We’re currently installing the most powerful supercomputer in the history of the center, but it’s just a roomful of hardware without fast and easy access for our clients,” said David Hudak, interim executive director of OSC. “OnDemand 3.0 provides them with seamless, flexible access to all our computer and storage services.”

Job of the Week: Research Computing Facilitator at OSC

Ohio State University is seeking a Research Computing Facilitator in our Job of the Week. “The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) provides high-performance computing (HPC) services for Ohio’s university researchers and industrial clients. The HPC Client Services Group delivers the client experience at OSC through client engagement and administration.”

Ohio Supercomputer Center Names New Cluster after Jesse Owens

The Ohio Supercomputer Center has named its newest HPC cluster after Olympic champion Jesse Owens. The new Owens Cluster will be powered by Dell PowerEdge servers featuring the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family, include storage components manufactured by DDN, and utilize interconnects provided by Mellanox. “Our newest supercomputer system is the most powerful that the Center has ever run,” ODHE Chancellor John Carey said in a recent letter to Owens’ daughters. “As such, I thought it fitting to name it for your father, who symbolizes speed, integrity and, most significantly for me, compassion as embodied by his tireless work to help youths overcome obstacles to their future success. As a first-generation college graduate, I can relate personally to the value of mentors in the lives of those students.”
