OpenPOWER Foundation Unveils IBM Hardware/Software Contributions at OpenPOWER Summit

Today at OpenPOWER Summit 2020, IBM announced it is contributing two technologies to the OpenPOWER community: the A2O Power processor core, an “out-of-order” follow-up to the A2I core and associated FPGA environment; and Open Cognitive Environment (Open-CE), based on IBM’s PowerAI, designed to enable improved consumability of AI and deep learning frameworks The contributions follow […]

Video: Powering the Road to National HPC Leadership

Jack Wells from ORNL gave this talk at the 2018 OpenPOWER Summit. “The Summit supercomputer coming to Oak Ridge is the next leap in leadership-class computing systems for open science. Summit will have a hybrid architecture, and each node will contain multiple IBM POWER9 CPUs and NVIDIA Volta GPUs all connected together with NVIDIA’s high-speed NVLink. Each node will have over half a terabyte of coherent memory (high bandwidth memory + DDR4) addressable by all CPUs and GPUs plus 800GB of non-volatile RAM that can be used as a burst buffer or as extended memory.”

Video: Enabling High-Performance Storage on OpenPOWER Systems

In this video from the 2016 OpenPOWER Summit, Stephen Bates of Microsemi presents: Enabling high-performance storage on OpenPOWER Systems. “Non-Volatile Memory (NVM), and the low latency access to storage it provides, is changing the compute stack. NVM Express is the de-facto protocol for communicating with local NVM attached over the PCIe interface. In this talk we will demonstrate performance data for extermely low-latency NVMe devices operating inside OpenPOWER systems. We will discuss the implications of this for applications like in-memory databases, analytics and cognitive computing. In addition we will present data on the emerging NVMe over Fabrics (NVMf) protocol running on OpenPOWER systems.”

Driving Innovation at the Hartree Centre with the OpenPOWER Architecture

In this video from the OpenPOWER Summit, Dr. Mike Ashworth from the STFC Hartree Centre presents: Driving Innovation at the Hartree Centre with the OpenPOWER Architecture. “The STFC Hartree Centre has been established with a focus on economic impact through our collaborations with UK industry, offering access to HPC and data intensive systems, code development expertise and collaborative research opportunities. Through a major partnership with IBM we have been porting and evaluating our key application codes on the OpenPOWER architecture seeking to leverage performance and productivity gains for the benefit of our key customers. We will describe progress in porting and optimization of applications from a range of science areas.”
