OpenStack for Research Computing

“This talk will present the motivating factors for considering OpenStack for the management of research computing infrastructure. Stig Telfer will give an overview of the differences in design criteria between cloud, HPC and data analytics, and how these differences can be mitigated through architectural and configuration choices of an OpenStack private cloud. Some real-world examples will be given that demonstrate the potential for using OpenStack for managing HPC infrastructure. This talk will present ways that the HPC community can gain the benefits of using software-defined infrastructure without paying the performance overhead.”

For HPC, Red Hat Offers Much More than just Linux

“The HPC Community demands performance, transparency, and value—exactly what Red Hat and open source offer. Red Hat is the standard choice for Linux in HPC clusterers worldwide. But it doesn’t stop there–our cloud, virtualization, storage, platform and service-oriented solutions bring real freedom and collaboration to federal, state, local, and academic programs. And Red Hat’s worldwide support, training and consulting services bring the power of open source to your agency. We are a part of a larger community working together to drive innovation.”

Speakers Announced for Dell HPC Community Meeting at SC16

The Dell HPC Community at SC16 has posted their Meeting Agenda. “Blair Bethwaite from Monash University will present OpenStack for HPC at Monash. After that, Josh Simons from VMWare will describe the latest technologies in HPC virtualization.” The event takes place Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Radisson Hotel in Salt Lake City.

Chameleon Testbed Blazes New Trails for Cloud HPC at TACC

“It’s often a challenge to test the scalability of system software components before a large deployment, particularly if you need low level hardware access”, said Dan Stanzione, Executive Director at TACC and a Co-PI on the Chameleon project. “Chameleon was designed for just these sort of cases – when your local test hardware is inadequate, and you are testing something that would be difficult to test in the commercial cloud – like replacing the available file system. Projects like Slash2 can use Chameleon to make tomorrow’s cloud systems better than today’s.”

Video: User Managed Virtual Clusters in Comet

Rick Wagner from SDSC presented this talk at the the 4th Annual MVAPICH User Group. “At SDSC, we have created a novel framework and infrastructure by providing virtual HPC clusters to projects using the NSF sponsored Comet supercomputer. Managing virtual clusters on Comet is similar to managing a bare-metal cluster in terms of processes and tools that are employed. This is beneficial because such processes and tools are familiar to cluster administrators.”

Video: Deploying OpenStack Solutions with Bright Computing & Transtec

In this video from the Transtec booth at ISC 2016, Piotr Wachowicz from Bright Computing shows how the company’s cluster management software enables customers to configure and monitor OpenStack systems. “Bright Cluster Manager provides a unified enterprise-grade solution for provisioning, scheduling, monitoring and management of HPC and Big Data systems in your data center and in the cloud. Our dynamic cloud provisioning optimizes cloud utilization by automatically creating servers when they’re needed and releasing them when they’re not. Bright OpenStack provides a complete cloud solution that is easy to deploy and manage.”

Video: Jetstream to Make HPC a Breeze for Researchers

In this video, researchers describe how the Jetstream project at Indiana University. Jetstream is a user-friendly cloud environment designed to give researchers access to interactive computing and data analysis resources on demand, whenever and wherever they want to analyze their data. It will provide a library of virtual machines designed to do discipline specific scientific analysis. Software creators and researchers will also be able to create their own customized virtual machines or their own private computing system within Jetstream.

Podcast: Ceph and the Future of Software Defined Storage

In this Intel Chip Chat podcast, Dan Ferber, Open Source Server Based Storage Technologist at Intel and Ross Turk, Director of Product Marketing for Red Hat describe how Ceph plays a critical role in delivering the full enterprise capability of OpenStack. Ross explains how Ceph allows you to build storage using open source software and standard servers and disks providing a lot of flexibility and enabling you to easily scale out storage. By lowering hardware costs, lowering the vendor lock-in threshold, and enabling customers to fix and enhance their own code, open source and software defined storage (SDS) solutions are enabling the future of next generation storage.

ProphetStor Leverages Mellanox Tech for Next-Gen Cloud Computing

Today ProphetStor Data Services rolled out a reference cloud computing platform with Mellanox based on the open-source projects OpenStack and Ceph. The solution leverages each company’s respective strength in software-defined-storage, state-of-the-art server hardware, and high-speed networking. Based on ProphetStor Federator SDS, this joint project addresses the key issues of OpenStack’s storage management solution as well as improving the functionality and performance of Ceph, the de facto storage backend for OpenStack.

Using OpenStack to Manage a Data Analytics HPC Cluster at PSC

“This talk will discuss the plans to use OpenStack to manage and automate dynamically changing an environment to provide users a highly re-configurable software environment with access to a large number of operating systems and software packages on the “Bridges system.” It will feature elements of OpenStack related to bare-metal booting, network provisioning, container management, storage, and scheduling nodes to match the workloads of the users.”
