SGI Awarded $27M Systems Contract with ARL

Today, SGI announced that the United States Department of Defense (DoD) has selected SGI ICE XA for two of its Army Research Laboratory Defense Supercomputing Resource Center systems. The upgrades are part of a technology insertion, known as TI-16, for their High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP). “We’re excited to partner with SGI for our TI-16 DoD program, and have full confidence in the system’s ability to provide excellent performance,” said Dr. Raju Namburu, director of ARL DSRC. “Choosing the right HPC partners is crucial, as we rely on supercomputing and large-scale analytics and predictive sciences to provide the competitive edge we need to maintain our position as the nation’s premier laboratory for land forces.”

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Completes Acquisition of SGI

Today Hewlett Packard Enterprise announced that it has completed its acquisition of SGI, a global leader in high performance solutions for compute, data analytics and data management, for $7.75 per share in cash. “This deal combines SGI’s computing strengths with HPE’s global reach,” said Antonio Neri, executive vice president and general manager, Enterprise Group, Hewlett Packard Enterprise. “SGI’s technologies and services will further our position in high-performance computing and give our customers the best of data management capabilities for real time analytics.”

SGI UV Powers Romanian Aerospace Agency

The National Institute of Aerospace Research in Romania will power its scientific and aeronautical research program with a new SGI UV system. “This is the second SGI system we have installed at INCAS,” said Costea Emil, head of Department Technical Services at INCAS. “SGI solutions have allowed us to rapidly develop and test our software prototypes and solutions. With our newest installation, we can reduce the time required to program algorithms, allowing us to focus on the key scientific problems we’re chartered to solve.”

Cheyenne – NCAR’s Next-Gen Data-Centric Supercomputer

In this video, Dave Hart, CISL User Services Manager presents: Cheyenne – NCAR’s Next-Generation Data-Centric Supercomputing Environment. “Cheyenne is a new 5.34-petaflops, high-performance computer built for NCAR by SGI. The hardware was delivered on Monday, September 12, at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC) and the system is on schedule to become operational at the beginning of 2017. All of the compute racks were powered up and nodes booted up within a few days of delivery.”

SGI Powers New Cirrus Supercomputer at EPCC

Businesses could dramatically cut the time taken to bring new products and services to market with help from a new SGI supercomputer at EPCC, the UK’s leading supercomputing center based at the University of Edinburgh. “This newly installed computing power – in tandem with EPCC’s in-house expertise – means we are well placed to help businesses meet many of the computational challenges associated with developing new products and services,” said George Graham, Commercial Manager of EPCC.

Video: Analysis of SSDs on SGI UV 300

Nikos Trikoupis from the City University of New York gave this talk at the HPC User Forum in Austin. “We focus on measuring the aggregate throughput delivered by 12 Intel SSD DC P3700 for NVMe cards installed on the SGI UV 300 scale-up system in the CUNY High Performance Computing Center. We establish a performance baseline for a single SSD. The 12 SSDs are assembled into a single RAID-0 volume using Linux Software RAID and the XVM Volume Manager. The aggregate read and write throughput is measured against different configurations that include the XFS and the GPFS file systems.”

University of Tokyo to Deploy IME14K Burst Buffer on Reedbush Supercomputer

Today DDN Japan announced that the University of Tokyo and the Joint Center for Advanced High Performance Computing (JCAHPC) has selected DDN’s burst buffer solution “IME14K” for their new Reedbush supercomputer. “Many problems in science and research today are located at the intersections of HPC and Big Data, and storage and I/O are increasingly important components of any large compute infrastructure.”
