In this special guest feature from Scientific Computing World, Cray’s Barry Bolding gives some predictions for the supercomputing industry in 2017. “2016 saw the introduction or announcement of a number of new and innovative processor technologies from leaders in the field such as Intel, Nvidia, ARM, AMD, and even from China. In 2017 we will continue to see capabilities evolve, but as the demand for performance improvements continues unabated and CMOS struggles to drive performance improvements we’ll see processors becoming more and more power hungry.”
Sugon Moves HPC as a Service to Europe with Arctur-2 Supercomputer

As announced at SC16, Chinese HPC vendor Sugon has built a new datacenter in Slovenia based around the Arctur-2 system, Sugon’s first installation in continental Europe and a major milestone in the company’s globalization strategy. “Arctur-2 is Sugon’s flagship hyperconverged HPC & Cloud computing infrastructure. According to Sugon, the system was designed and built to fit various and diverse usage scenarios, from general use Cloud Computing to HPC computing as well as Big Data analytics. By converging different types of servers into single entity we achieved high performance, energy efficiency and seamless management, Sugon is able to provide an HPC on demand to its customers.”

Sugon is one of the top HPC vendors in China. With plans to expand operations in the West, the company is once again sponsoring the ISC 2016 conference. “Sugon, used to be called Dawning, rooted from the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ICT), and was the first (and now largest) HPC local vendor in China. Since 1990, Sugon has been working on High Performance Computing, producing seven generations of HPC systems, such as Dawning I and Dawning 1000 to 6000. We have successfully supported more than 10,000 HPC projects.”
China’s HPC Vendors Look to US and European Markets

Who are the world’s most important vendors of supercomputers, at least as measured by the number of systems they have in the Top500? HP is the leader with a 31 per cent share; Cray is number two with just under 14 per cent. So far, so unsurprising. But what has been little remarked upon is that in third place – with 49 systems, or 9.8 per cent of the Top500 list – is the Chinese vendor, Sugon. And both Sugon and Inspur, the other main Chinese vendor, have their sights set on expanding still further, with trade missions to Europe and setting up partnerships and subsidiaries in both Europe and the USA.
